Studio Display costs $1,599 and Studio Display XDR costs $3,299, a gap of exactly $1,700. Both are 27-inch 5K displays from Apple, both launched together in March 2026, well before Apple’s September event, and the gap buys a genuinely different panel technology, not just a badge. Here is what Apple has actually published on each side of that line, and where its own material stops.

What $1,700 buys: the panel
The clearest documented difference is the backlight. Studio Display XDR uses mini-LED with 2,304 local dimming zones, which is how Apple reaches its stated 2000 nits of peak HDR brightness and a 1,000,000-to-1 contrast ratio. Apple’s material on the standard Studio Display does not describe a mini-LED backlight and gives a single brightness figure of 600 nits, with no separate HDR peak and no contrast ratio published. Studio Display XDR also adds Adobe RGB alongside P3, and a 120Hz refresh rate with Adaptive Sync from 47Hz, neither of which Apple states for the standard model in the material reviewed here.
What $1,700 buys: power and the stand
Studio Display charges a connected laptop at up to 96W, which Apple says suits the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Studio Display XDR raises that to 140W, Apple’s figure for fast-charging the 16-inch MacBook Pro, and Apple additionally describes the XDR as functioning as a Thunderbolt hub in its own right. The stand tells a similar story: the standard Studio Display includes a tilt-adjustable stand, with a tilt-and-height version or VESA adapter sold as options, while Studio Display XDR includes the tilt-and-height stand, with a 105mm height range, as the default and a VESA adapter as the only extra.

What $1,700 does not buy
Some features are identical on both displays, so the extra money does not touch them. Both use the same 12-megapixel Center Stage camera with Desk View, the same three-microphone array with directional beamforming, and the same six-speaker system with Spatial Audio. Both offer standard or nano-texture glass as a finish choice, and both carry two Thunderbolt 5 and two USB-C ports, even though the power delivered through them differs. Studio Display XDR is also the only one of the two with a documented medical imaging mode, built around DICOM presets and a Medical Imaging Calibrator, though Apple flagged FDA clearance for that mode as pending when it launched and has not published a change since.
Which Mac each one is built to sit on
Apple’s own Mac Studio material draws the clearest line between the two: a Mac Studio built with M5 Max, from the same 2026 chip family as A20 Pro, is described as able to drive up to four Studio Display XDR units at once, at 5K and 120Hz. That is a pairing Apple states specifically for the XDR model, not the standard Studio Display. Both Mac mini and Mac Studio, the two current Macs sold without a built-in screen, reach general sale Tuesday, September 22, ten days from today, which is when that pairing becomes something buyers can actually walk out of a store with, alongside iPhone 18 Pro already on shelves since September 18.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a refresh rate, a peak HDR brightness or a contrast ratio for the standard Studio Display, so none of those three figures can be compared directly against the XDR model’s stated numbers. It has not published an image-quality or colour-accuracy comparison between the two beyond the specs listed here, and this article makes none either. It has not said whether either display will see a price change or a new configuration, and it has not linked either display to macOS 27, arriving Monday, September 14, in any documented way.
As of September 12, the $1,700 gap between the two displays is best read through the mini-LED backlight, the brightness and contrast it enables, and the higher charging wattage, which are the differences Apple has actually documented rather than implied.
