The $20 between the $129 AirPods 5 and the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case buys more than a charging coil. Apple’s tech specs show the $149 case is 2.4 g heavier at 34.7 g, has a speaker for Find My, charges on Apple Watch chargers and Qi pads as well as USB-C, and comes with earbuds that carry a force sensor with volume swipe and one extra hour of listening per charge.
Those last two points are the surprise. Apple lists the earbuds on both models as the same 4.3 g, same dimensions, same H2 chip and same sensors, yet the battery ratings and the force sensor description differ. Weight and size: 2.4 g for the coil and speaker
Both cases measure 46.2 by 50.1 by 21.2 mm, so any sleeve or pocket that fits one fits the other. The USB-C case weighs 32.3 g and the Wireless Charging Case weighs 34.7 g, according to Apple’s tech specs. The 2.4 g difference is what the wireless coil and the speaker add.

Those are also the exact case weights Apple lists for AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC, and the earbuds are the same 4.3 g and 30.2 by 18.3 by 18.1 mm across all four products. Physically, the AirPods 5 case pair is unchanged from last year.
Speaker, Find My and charging options
Only the $149 case has a speaker. Apple’s tech specs describe the box contents as a Charging Case (USB-C) with speaker, and the speaker is what lets Find My play a sound when the case is misplaced. The $129 case has no speaker, so Find My can show its location but cannot make it audible.
Charging is the headline difference and the source of the model name. The $129 case charges over USB-C only. The $149 case charges over USB-C, Apple Watch chargers and Qi-certified chargers. Apple does not list MagSafe on the AirPods 5 sheet; MagSafe charging appears only on the AirPods Pro 3 case.
Volume swipe and the extra hour
Apple’s sensor list for the $149 model reads force sensor with volume swipe, while the $129 model reads force sensor. The press release called swipe volume control a first for the open-ear form factor and tied it to the Wireless Charging Case model. If you want to adjust volume on the stem without reaching for your iPhone or Apple Watch, the $149 model is the one that lists it.
The battery gap is one hour in every single-charge rating. The $149 model is rated for up to 5 hours with ANC on and 7 hours with ANC off; the $129 model is rated for 4 and 6. Total listening with the case is 22 hours against 20. Apple has not published a reason for the difference, and the earbud weights are identical, so we cannot say whether the cell or the tuning differs.
The five-minute charge is around 1 hour on both. Apple’s pages differ slightly here, with a compare page fetch showing around 1.5 hours, so we are quoting the AirPods 5 spec page.
Which case to buy
The $20 step gets you wireless charging, a speaker, volume swipe and an hour more per charge. If you already own an Apple Watch charger or a Qi pad and want the longer ANC rating, the $149 model is the better value on paper. If you charge from a cable anyway and mostly use ANC off, the $129 model gives 6 hours a charge and 20 hours total.
