Apple Watch Series 10 is on the watchOS 27 compatibility list, so every software feature Apple showed on September 9 lands on the watch you already own, free, on September 14. What the $399 Apple Watch Series 12 buys is hardware: the new Health Sensing System, up to 24 hours of battery instead of 18, and a Ceramic Shield 2 front crystal on the aluminum models.

Series 10 arrived in 2024 at $399 with the S10 chip. Series 12 arrives at the same $399 starting price with the S11, so this is a like-for-like decision two generations apart rather than a price increase. Apple no longer sells Series 10.

Figures come from Apple’s tech specs for each watch. The display, the water rating and the storage are unchanged, which is why the upgrade case rests almost entirely on sensing and battery.

What only the Series 12 hardware does

FeatureSeries 10Series 12
Heart rate samplingApple has not published a five-second figureEvery five seconds, all day
HRV samplingApple has not published a five-minute figureEvery five minutes, 24 times more often than Series 11
Recovery HRV and the daytime vitals viewNot listed by AppleListed
Readiness app, 0 to 10 dailyNot listed by AppleListed
Audio Intelligence: Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Sound RecognitionNot listed by AppleListed, built on the S11 Secure Exclave; Sound Recognition coming late 2026
Ceramic case optionNoPearl White and Night Blue
Ceramic Shield 2 front crystal on aluminumNoYes, 60 percent tougher than Ion-X

Apple lists the Health Sensing System, Readiness and Audio Intelligence under Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 only. It has not said whether any of them will reach older watches, so treat them as hardware features until Apple says otherwise.

Battery is the quiet part of the upgrade

Apple rates Series 12 at up to 24 hours of normal use against 18 hours for Series 10, which is six more hours on Apple’s own ratings. A 15-minute charge is quoted at 12 hours of normal use, up from eight, and five minutes is quoted at up to 10 hours of sleep tracking.

That matters more than it sounds if you want overnight tracking. Readiness draws on sleep, and sleep tracking means wearing the watch in bed, which means finding a charging window somewhere else in the day. Both watches reach 80 percent in about 30 minutes.

Who should keep the Series 10

If you wear the watch for notifications, workouts and the software, watchOS 27 covers you and the case for spending is thin. If you charge overnight and never sleep-track, the battery gain is worth less to you than the numbers suggest.

If you do want the new sensing, the cheapest published route is $399 outright for the 42mm aluminum model, or an Apple Upgrade lease from $11.99 a month over 24 months. That lease adds up to $287.76 across two years on Apple’s published monthly figure, which is our arithmetic, and a lease is not a purchase: Apple has not published its end-of-term terms in this release. Apple’s Trade In page does not show a dollar estimate for any Apple Watch until you answer its condition questions, so do not budget around a trade-in number you have not been quoted.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published titanium, ceramic or cellular prices for Series 12, band prices, or any Apple Watch trade-in value. It has not said whether five-second heart rate sampling, Readiness or Audio Intelligence will come to Series 9, 10 or 11. It has not published an outdoor workout battery figure for Series 10, and it has not said whether the SE line returns after SE 3 vanished from the store before the event.

Pre-orders for Series 12 are open now and the watch reaches stores on Friday, September 18. watchOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14, so Series 10 owners can live with the free half of this upgrade for four days before deciding whether to pay for the other half.
