Apple is expected to introduce the Apple Watch Series 12 today during its September 9 “Surprise and shine” keynote, with the new smartwatch reportedly bringing a faster chip, expanded health tracking, longer battery life, new software features, and the return of a premium ceramic case.
The overall design is expected to remain close to the Apple Watch Series 11, so most of this year’s changes should happen inside the watch and through watchOS 27. Apple is also expected to introduce the Apple Watch Ultra 4 during the same keynote.

A new Apple Watch chip is finally expected
One of the more important hardware changes should be a new processor. Apple Watch Series 11 continued using the S10 platform found in earlier models, while leaked Apple software references point to a new CPU architecture for the 2026 watches.
That means Series 12 should deliver the first noticeable Apple Watch processor update in several generations, with faster app launches and additional processing capacity for new health and AI features.

Readiness could become one of the biggest new health features
Apple is reportedly preparing a dedicated Readiness app for Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. Code found inside watchOS 27 places the app alongside Workout, while reports describe it as a recovery-focused feature that uses health measurements to determine how prepared your body is for physical activity.
The system is expected to use information such as:
- Heart rate
- Blood oxygen data where available
- Wrist temperature
- Sleep information
- Respiratory measurements
- Workout and recovery data
Apple already offers hypertension notifications on recent models, including the Apple Watch Series 11, so Series 12 appears set to expand the company’s broader health and wellness strategy.
Continuous heart-rate sensing and AI day summaries
Apple is also testing continuous heart-rate collection throughout the day, rather than relying as heavily on periodic measurements outside workouts. This additional data could feed into Readiness and other health analysis features.
A separate feature reportedly called Ambient Sensing will analyze daily activity and generate summaries covering information such as activities, meals, locations, and interactions. Reports say the system will not save audio recordings or provide conversation transcripts.
Ceramic Apple Watch could return
Series 12 could also revive one of Apple’s most distinctive case materials. Reports point to a ceramic Apple Watch returning for the first time since the Series 5 generation, with Apple reportedly testing white and dark gray versions.

What Apple Watch Series 12 probably will not get
Several earlier rumors now look less likely before today’s announcement:
- Touch ID is not expected despite references appearing in leaked Apple code.
- A major case redesign is unlikely.
- Sensor-equipped Apple Watch bands remain unconfirmed.
- Non-invasive blood glucose monitoring is still considered a longer-term project rather than a Series 12 feature.
