Buying Your First Apple Watch in 2026: Series 12 vs Ultra 4 and What the New Health Sensing Changes

If you have never owned an Apple Watch, today’s lineup comes down to two choices: Apple Watch Series 12 from $399 or Apple Watch Ultra 4 from $799. Both use the new S11 chip and the same Health Sensing System, so the health features that Apple spent most of its keynote on do not depend on which one you pick.

There is no cheaper new option this year. Apple did not announce a new Apple Watch SE, and the SE 3 disappeared from Apple’s store before the event. Apple has not said whether the SE line will return, so for a first watch bought new, Series 12 is the entry point.

First, check your iPhone

An Apple Watch needs an iPhone, and watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (3rd generation), running iOS 27. If your phone is older than that, budget for a phone before a watch.

The new Health app features add a second bar. Health Age, the Longevity tab and the new Insights tab run on Apple Intelligence iPhones, and Apple has not listed which models qualify in its release. Siri AI with personal context on the watch is in beta, English first, and not available to users under 13.

The simplest way to read that table: pay $400 more for battery, titanium and satellite features, not for health. Apple has not published the display sizes or weights of either watch, so hands-on comparisons will have to wait for September 18.

What the new health sensing means if you are starting from zero

Previous Apple Watches sampled heart rate periodically during the day. Series 12 and Ultra 4 read it every 5 seconds all day, and heart rate variability every 5 minutes, which Apple says is 24 times more often than before. Apple cites a study of more than 1,000 participants in July and August 2026 to call it the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.

For a first-time owner the practical result is that the watch starts building a personal baseline from day one, and the Readiness score, a 0 to 10 rating with Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready and Go For It recommendations, draws on that baseline along with activity, training load and sleep.

Older watches on watchOS 27 do not get the new sensors, and Apple lists Readiness only for the new models, so buying a used Series 11 to save money means missing the feature Apple built the launch around. On the other hand, Health Age in the new Health app works with any Apple Watch that supplies VO2 max, resting heart rate, sleep and HRV.

Costs beyond the watch

  • Titanium, ceramic and cellular Series 12 models: prices not published
  • Extra bands: Apple announced new colors but no prices
  • Labs blood panel in the Health app: $119, US only
  • Cellular service: carrier plans, not covered in Apple’s release

Both watches can be pre-ordered today and reach stores on Friday, September 18, with watchOS 27 arriving on September 14. If you are also weighing a new phone, our iPhone 18 Pro coverage and Series 12 preview cover the rest of the lineup.
