The ceramic Apple Watch Series 12 is not quite the same size as the aluminum and titanium models. Apple’s tech specs list the ceramic cases at 43 mm and 47 mm tall and 9.85 mm deep, against 42 mm and 46 mm and 9.7 mm for the other materials, even though Apple sells all three under the 42mm and 46mm names.
The display is identical across materials, so the extra millimeter is case, not screen. Ceramic is also the heaviest Series 12 by a clear margin. Every figure here comes from Apple’s Series 12 tech specs page.

How much bigger the ceramic case is
On the 42mm model, the ceramic case is 1 mm taller, the same 37 mm width, and 0.15 mm deeper. On the 46mm model it is 1 mm taller, 1 mm wider at 41 mm, and the same 0.15 mm deeper. The 9.85 mm depth applies to both ceramic sizes.

That is a small difference in absolute terms, but it means the 42mm ceramic watch is closer in height to a 43 mm case than a 42 mm one, and the 46mm ceramic watch sits between the 46mm aluminum model and the 49 mm Ultra 4, which Apple lists at 49 mm by 44 mm by 12 mm.
The display does not change
Apple lists one display per size regardless of material: 374 by 446 pixels and 970 square millimeters on the 42mm, 416 by 496 pixels and 1196 square millimeters on the 46mm, both at 326 pixels per inch with wide-angle OLEDs, LTPO3, a 1 Hz minimum refresh rate, 2000 nits peak brightness and a 1 nit minimum.
Everything inside is shared too: the S11 chip with a 4-core Neural Engine, 64GB of storage, the third-generation electrical heart sensor and always-on optical heart sensor, 50 m water resistance, IP6X dust resistance, and the same battery ratings of up to 24 hours normal use, 38 hours in Low Power Mode and 10 hours of outdoor workout.

A 46mm Night Blue ceramic watch weighs 52.9 g, 13.4 g more than the 39.5 g aluminum GPS model and 8 g more than titanium. Night Blue is heavier than Pearl White in both sizes, by 1.1 g on the 42mm and 1.6 g on the 46mm. For context, Apple lists Ultra 4 at 63.0 g in natural titanium.
What it means for bands and fit
Apple’s specs give the same wrist-fit range for each size regardless of material: 130 to 200 mm for the 42mm and 140 to 245 mm for the 46mm. Apple does not list a separate band size for ceramic, and the width of the 42mm ceramic case matches the aluminum and titanium models exactly.
The new Series 12 bands Apple announced, including Sport Band in olive, burgundy, wildflower blue and pale succulent, and Sport Loop in chambray blue, magenta, burgundy plaid and light umber plaid, are described for Series 12 generally rather than for one material. Apple’s press release pairs ceramic with a sapphire crystal front, the same as titanium, while aluminum models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple calls 60 percent tougher than Ion-X glass. What Apple has not said
- Ceramic Series 12 prices. Apple’s Store page lists Series 12 from $399, and the press release does not give titanium, ceramic or cellular prices.
- Why the ceramic case is 1 mm taller and 0.15 mm deeper. Apple lists the numbers without explanation.
- Whether any band or accessory fits differently on ceramic. Apple’s specs list identical wrist-fit ranges and no exceptions.
- Display size in inches for either Series 12 size.
Series 12, including the ceramic models, is on pre-order now and arrives in stores on Friday, September 18. If you want the lighter option, the aluminum 42mm at 32.2 g is the one to pick; if you want ceramic, budget for a watch that is a millimeter taller and about 10 g heavier than the aluminum model in the same size, alongside the Ultra 4 at 63 g.
