Aluminum Apple Watch Series 12 models get a new front crystal called Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass it replaces. The upgrade applies to all four aluminum finishes, dark bronze, black, light gold and space gray, and comes at the same $399 starting price as last year.

Ion-X glass has covered aluminum Apple Watch models for years, including the Series 11 from September 2025, and it has always been the softer option compared with the crystal on the more expensive cases. Ceramic Shield 2 narrows that gap for the cheapest Series 12. Our Series 12 preview covers the pre-event expectations, and the event recap has the rest of the day.

What Ceramic Shield 2 is and what the 60 percent means

Ceramic Shield is the name Apple uses for its toughened cover glass, and the 2 marks the version arriving on Series 12. Apple’s release gives one figure: 60 percent tougher than Ion-X glass.

Apple has not published how it measured toughness, whether the figure refers to scratch resistance, crack resistance or both, or the test conditions behind it. Treat the number as Apple’s own comparison against its previous aluminum-model glass, not as an independent rating.

Which Series 12 models have Ceramic Shield 2

Apple’s release specifies Ceramic Shield 2 for aluminum models only. It does not say what covers the radiant gold and natural titanium cases or the new pearl white and night blue ceramic cases.

  • Dark bronze aluminum: Ceramic Shield 2
  • Black aluminum: Ceramic Shield 2
  • Light gold aluminum: Ceramic Shield 2
  • Space gray aluminum: Ceramic Shield 2
  • Titanium and ceramic: Apple has not specified the front crystal

Apple also has not said whether the Ultra 4 uses Ceramic Shield 2; its release does not mention the material.

Does it change how you should buy?

For most buyers it strengthens the case for the $399 model. The aluminum Series 12 already has the same S11 chip, Health Sensing System, Readiness score and 24-hour battery as the titanium and ceramic versions, and the tougher glass removes one of the traditional reasons to spend more.

If you have cracked or scratched an aluminum Apple Watch before, the 60 percent figure is the number to weigh, with the caveat that Apple has not shared the test behind it. Series 12 is available to pre-order today, September 9, and reaches stores on Friday, September 18. Apple has not said whether it will publish more detail on Ceramic Shield 2 before then.
