The iPhone 18 Pro’s front camera is an 18MP Center Stage camera with an f/1.9 aperture, according to Apple’s tech specs. That is the same front camera on the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Apple’s press release did not mention the front camera at all, which we noted in our iPhone 18 Pro launch coverage. The tech specs page fills in the two numbers that matter, and this piece explains what they mean next to the three 48MP rear cameras.

The front camera is the only one under 48MP. It sits between the main camera’s widest and narrowest apertures: brighter than the f/2.2 Ultra Wide and the f/2.8 telephoto, but not as wide as the main camera at f/1.48.

What 18MP means for selfies
An 18MP sensor gives more room to crop than a 12MP one and more detail in a group selfie held at arm’s length. Apple’s tech specs do not list the sensor size, pixel size or field of view for the front camera, so we cannot say how it compares on those measures.

Why Apple calls it a Center Stage camera
Apple’s tech specs use the Center Stage name for the front camera rather than a plain TrueDepth or front camera label. Apple has not published a feature description for Center Stage specific to the iPhone 18 Pro, so we will leave the details to Apple’s own documentation once the phones ship.
What the tech specs do confirm is that Face ID is retained behind the smaller Dynamic Island, per Apple’s press release, so the front camera module still handles both authentication and photos.
f/1.9 and low-light selfies
An f/1.9 aperture is a fixed value; unlike the rear main camera there is no variable aperture on the front. In low light the front camera cannot open wider, so it relies on exposure time and processing rather than a bigger opening.

Apple’s press release lists faster Night mode and upgraded Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls for the iPhone 18 Pro, but does not state which cameras those apply to, so we are not attributing them to the front camera specifically.
Front camera video
Apple’s tech specs list video capabilities for the phone as a whole (4K Dolby Vision up to 120 fps, Cinematic mode up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps) but do not break out a separate front-camera video spec. Apple has not published the front camera’s maximum video resolution or frame rate.
Both sizes share this camera, so it does not factor into the choice between the Pro and Pro Max. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, September 18, and we will test the front camera against the iPhone 17 Pro once review units arrive.
