The 2TB iPhone 18 Pro costs $2,399 on Apple’s Store page, exactly $1,200 more than the $1,199 256GB model. That difference is one dollar more than the price of the base phone, so the top tier costs very nearly two entry-level iPhone 18 Pros for one phone with eight times the storage.

What the $1,200 actually buys, tier by tier

Treating 1TB as 1,024GB, the 256GB to 512GB step adds 256GB for $200, or about $0.78 per gigabyte. The 512GB to 1TB step adds 512GB for $400, again about $0.78. The final step adds 1,024GB for $600, about $0.59 per gigabyte, so the 2TB jump is the cheapest per gigabyte on the ladder even though it is the largest single bill.

Measured against the base model, the 2TB phone gives you 1,792GB of extra space for $1,200, roughly $0.67 per gigabyte. The Pro Max version follows the same pattern: $2,499 for 2TB against $1,299 for 256GB, the same $1,200 gap, and only $100 more than the 2TB Pro.
Who fills 2TB on an iPhone 18 Pro
Apple’s tech specs give the clearest hint about who the tier is for. The main, Ultra Wide and telephoto cameras are all 48MP Fusion sensors, video runs up to 4K Dolby Vision at 120 fps, Cinematic mode reaches 4K at 60 fps, and spatial video is captured alongside regular clips. Apple Reference Image adds an untouched original with verification metadata to every edited photo, which means one photograph can occupy two files.
Manual aperture and shutter controls, covered in our variable aperture explainer, are the kind of features that turn a phone into a working camera. Photographers who keep every frame at full resolution, and video shooters who leave 4K 120 fps on, are the audience for $2,399.
There is one caveat in Apple’s own listing. ProRes is specified at up to 4K 120 fps with external recording, so the heaviest video files Apple describes are designed to go to a USB-C drive at up to 10 Gb/s rather than to internal storage. If ProRes is your main reason for wanting space, an external drive plus the 1TB model at $1,799 covers the same workflow for $600 less.
What else $1,200 covers
Because the gap equals the price of a whole 256GB iPhone 18 Pro, there is an argument that the money is better spent elsewhere in Apple’s September lineup. From Apple’s own price lists this week:
- A second 256GB iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199, with $1 left over
- The 1TB iPhone 18 Pro at $1,799 plus AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149, for $1,948, still $451 under the 2TB model
- The 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,899, which is $500 under the 2TB Pro and adds the larger 6.9-inch display and Apple’s 45-hour video playback rating
The $1,200 figure also happens to match the maximum trade-in credit AT&T advertises for the iPhone 18 Pro, according to Apple’s wording on its carrier pages, though Apple does not publish per-device trade-in values and that credit is not tied to any particular storage tier.
Verdict: is 2TB worth $1,200 more?
On a per-gigabyte basis, yes, the 2TB tier is the best value step Apple offers, at about $0.59 per added gigabyte against $0.78 for the two steps below it. On an absolute basis, a $1,200 surcharge doubles the cost of the phone, and the one video format that produces the largest files is designed for external storage anyway.
Our suggestion is to buy 2TB only if you already run out of room on a 1TB phone, or you shoot 48MP stills and 4K 120 fps video daily and refuse to offload. Everyone else gets more from the $400 step to 1TB, or from spending the difference on the Pro Max instead of the Pro.
