Smart Focus is a new subject tracking feature on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple listed it in its press release next to the 48MP Fusion main camera and its f/1.48 to f/4 variable aperture.
Subject tracking is a staple of dedicated cameras, where the body locks onto a person, animal or object and keeps refocusing as it moves across the frame. Apple has not named the feature this way on an iPhone before, and the timing is not accidental.
Why subject tracking matters more with a wide aperture
At f/1.48 the zone of sharp focus is thin. A child running toward the camera or a dog turning its head can leave that zone in a fraction of a second, and on a fixed-aperture phone with a deeper focus zone the miss would be far less visible.

Once you give people a lens that can throw the background out of focus, you also have to give them a way to keep the subject in it. Smart Focus reads as Apple’s answer to that problem.

The press release names the feature and describes it as subject tracking, and that is where the official detail ends. Keynote coverage grouped it with the manual aperture and shutter controls as part of a more deliberate, photographer-oriented camera.
The A20 Pro connection
Tracking a subject frame by frame is recognition work, and the A20 Pro has more capacity for it than any previous iPhone chip. Its dual 16-core Neural Engine has 32 cores in total and, according to Apple, double the AI processing of the A19 Pro.
Apple has not said that Smart Focus depends on that hardware, so the link is circumstantial. It does make it less likely that the feature will be offered on older phones in software alone, though that remains an open question until Apple publishes compatibility details.
Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and the phones ship Friday, September 18, from $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the Pro Max. The first hands-on reports should show how well Smart Focus holds up with a moving subject at f/1.48.
