iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro Max: Should You Downsize to the New Small Pro?

The iPhone 18 Pro is rated by Apple for up to 36 hours of video playback, three hours short of the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 39 hours, and it weighs 22 grams less. If you bought last year’s big Pro mainly for its battery, the new 6.3-inch phone now gets most of the way there at the same $1,199 the 17 Pro Max launched at.

You gain a newer chip, a variable-aperture main camera and faster charging; you give up 0.6 inches of screen and a few hours of battery. Here is every figure from Apple’s tech specs and compare page that matters, and the cases where downsizing makes sense.

Size and weight: what you give up in the hand

Apple’s tech specs put the iPhone 18 Pro at 150.0 x 71.9 x 8.75 mm and 211 grams. The iPhone 17 Pro Max measures 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm and weighs 233 grams, so the 18 Pro is 13.4 mm shorter, 6.1 mm narrower and exactly as thick.

The screen is where the trade shows. Both panels are 460 ppi OLED Super Retina XDR with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On, 1600 nits peak HDR and 3000 nits peak outdoors, so the 18 Pro gives up size but nothing in sharpness or brightness. If you bought the Pro Max reluctantly for its battery rather than its screen, the next section is the one that matters.

Battery and charging: 36 hours against 39

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback and 33 hours of streamed video, with up to 24 hours of typical use. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is rated for 39 hours of video playback and 35 hours streamed on Apple’s compare page. The gap is three hours on local video and two on streaming, which puts the new small Pro within 92 percent of last year’s big one.

Charging moves the other way. Apple’s tech specs say the 18 Pro reaches 50 percent in about 15 minutes with a 60W USB-C adapter, sold separately. The 17 Pro Max’s claim is 50 percent in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter. Both support MagSafe and Qi2 at up to 25W. Our iPhone 18 Pro battery life and charging guide has the full set of Apple’s ratings.

Cameras: variable aperture is the only lens change

The 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion main camera at 24 mm has a variable aperture with four stops, f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, where the 17 Pro Max has a fixed f/1.78 lens. Apple’s press release adds manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app, Smart Focus subject tracking and faster Night mode. How the variable aperture works is covered separately.

Everything else on the spec sheet matches. Both phones list a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm f/2.2, a 48MP 4x tetraprism telephoto at 100 mm f/2.8 with 12MP optical-quality 8x at 200 mm, and an 18MP Center Stage front camera at f/1.9. Video on both tops out at 4K Dolby Vision at 120 fps, with ProRes RAW, Genlock and Apple Log 2 listed for each.

Chip, connectivity and storage

The A20 Pro is Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip. Apple’s press release lists a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster than A19 Pro, a dual 16-core Neural Engine with double the AI processing and 50 percent more memory bandwidth, plus a vapor chamber attached directly to the chip with about three times the cooling performance of the previous design. Our A20 Pro explainer goes deeper.

Both phones have Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, USB-C with USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s and IP68. The 18 Pro adds the N1 wireless chip with Thread and the C2 modem, which Apple says uses 15 percent less energy than C1X. Storage runs 256GB to 2TB on both; the 17 Pro Max already offered a 2TB tier.

Should you downsize?

Downsize if the 17 Pro Max has felt like too much phone and you would trade three hours of video for 22 fewer grams, a chip a generation newer and the variable aperture. The 18 Pro at $1,199 for 256GB is the same money the Pro Max cost a year ago, and the 24-month option is $49.95 a month.

Stay on the 17 Pro Max, or move to the 18 Pro Max, if screen size is why you bought big. The 18 Pro Max is rated for 45 hours of video and 30 hours of typical use at $1,299; our 18 Pro vs 18 Pro Max comparison lays out that choice. For 17 Pro owners rather than Pro Max owners, see the eight differences between the 18 Pro and 17 Pro.

What Apple has not said

  • A typical-use hour rating for the iPhone 17 Pro Max in the terms Apple uses for the 18 Pro’s 24 hours.
  • Which of the 18 Pro’s new camera features, such as Smart Focus or faster Night mode, will reach the 17 Pro Max through iOS 27.
  • Trade-in values for a 17 Pro Max; Apple’s carrier pages advertise up to $1,200 in credit but do not list per-device amounts.
  • A current Apple Store price for the 17 Pro Max, which Apple’s compare page now lists as available at authorized resellers.

iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT on Apple’s Store page, with availability on Friday, September 18 in more than 65 countries. The 256GB model is $1,199, the 512GB $1,399, the 1TB $1,799 and the 2TB $2,399.
