iPhone Duo 256GB vs 2TB: The $1,200 Storage Gap Costs More Than a Whole iPhone 18 Pro

iPhone Duo costs $1,999 for 256GB and $3,199 for 2TB, so the walk from the bottom of the range to the top is $1,200. That is more than the price of a whole iPhone 18 Pro, which starts at $1,199, and it is more than Apple’s highest published trade-in credit of $885 could cover.

The tiers do not rise evenly. It is $200 to 512GB, another $400 to 1TB, and another $600 to 2TB. The step worth taking is usually the first one, and the reason is arithmetic rather than taste.

What the $1,200 gap is worth next to

Set the gap against the other numbers from this launch and it stops looking like a configuration choice. It is $1 more than an iPhone 18 Pro at 256GB. It exceeds the $885 ceiling of Apple Trade In, which needs an iPhone 17 Pro Max in good condition to reach.

It also matches the largest carrier credit Apple footnotes for iPhone 18 Pro, the up to $1,200 that arrives as bill credits over 36 months. No carrier has published anything at all for iPhone Duo, so there is no credit on the horizon to offset a top-tier order.

Where the money stops making sense

The table below is our arithmetic on Apple’s published prices. The monthly column divides each price by 24, a method that reproduces Apple’s own $83.29 for the 256GB model to the cent. Apple has not published US monthly figures for the higher tiers.

StoragePriceExtra over 256GBCost per extra gigabyteMonthly over 24 months
256GB$1,999BaselineBaseline$83.29 (Apple’s figure)
512GB$2,199$200$0.78$91.63
1TB$2,599$600$0.78$108.29
2TB$3,199$1,200$0.67$133.29

Two things fall out of that. The first two steps cost exactly the same per gigabyte, so 1TB is not a worse deal than 512GB, it is simply a bigger cheque. The second is that 2TB is the best value per gigabyte in the range and still the worst use of $1,200, because value per gigabyte only matters if you fill the gigabytes.

In monthly terms the same decision reads as $8.34 more a month for 512GB, $25 more for 1TB and $50 more for 2TB, over 24 months. Apple’s UK store shows the same shape over a 30-month term at 0 percent: Ā£66.63 a month for 256GB against Ā£106.63 for 2TB.

What Apple has not published about filling 2TB

Apple gives no per-minute file sizes for any capture format, so nobody can tell you how many hours of video a tier holds. What Apple does publish is the format list, and on iPhone Duo that is 4K Dolby Vision at 24 to 120 fps, 4K time-lapse and Dual Capture, which records the front and rear cameras at the same time.

Worth noting for anyone stepping across from a Pro: Apple’s published Duo video list does not include ProRes, which is the format that fills an iPhone 18 Pro fastest. The fold is a large-screen device first and a capture device second.

The honest guide is your own usage. iOS reports what is on your current phone under Settings, General, iPhone Storage, broken down by category. If photos and video have not passed 200GB in three years on your current iPhone, a 2TB order is buying headroom you have never needed.

The tier most buyers should take

For most people that is 512GB at $2,199. It doubles the base capacity for the smallest absolute step in the range, and $200 is recoverable in a way that $1,200 is not.

1TB earns its $600 if you shoot 4K video regularly or keep an offline music and photo library on the device. 2TB makes sense only if you are already filling more than 1TB today, because storage cannot be changed after purchase, and Apple’s trade-in ceiling is nowhere near the gap if you later decide you overbought.

What has not been confirmed

Apple has not published US monthly figures above the 256GB tier, an AppleCare+ price for iPhone Duo, or repair pricing for the folding display. No carrier has published a Duo offer, and there is no refurbished route either: the newest refurbished iPhone Apple listed this week is an iPhone 16, and Apple publishes no timetable for when models join that store.

Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT and iPhone Duo ships Friday, October 23, which leaves six weeks to check what your current phone is actually holding. Our iPhone Duo price and specifications guide and our Duo against iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison cover the rest of the decision.
