iPhone Duo has no SIM tray in any country. According to Apple’s press release, the foldable is eSIM-only worldwide, with dual eSIM that keeps two lines active at once, stores eight or more profiles, and works with more than 500 carriers.
That is a bigger step than the iPhone 18 Pro takes. The Pro drops its SIM tray in 12 countries, including the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and keeps it everywhere else. The Duo launches October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, including Australia, Brazil, China, India, Germany, France, the UK and Vietnam, and every one of them gets the same eSIM-only phone.

What dual eSIM means for travelers
Two active lines is the part that matters abroad. In practice it means your home number stays live for calls and texts while a second line, such as a local or travel data plan, handles data. With eight or more profiles stored, you can keep plans for countries you visit regularly and switch between them in Settings rather than buying a new card each trip.

The trade-off is the obvious one: if you land somewhere and your only option is a prepaid SIM card, the Duo cannot take it. Apple’s 500-carrier figure is global, and Apple has not published which carriers in which countries offer eSIM for the Duo, so check your usual carrier and your destination’s carriers before pre-ordering.
For places with no coverage at all, the Duo includes Messages via satellite, Emergency SOS via satellite and Roadside Assistance via satellite, free for two years.
What eSIM-only means for switching carriers
Switching carriers on an eSIM-only phone means downloading a new profile rather than waiting for a card in the mail, and the Duo can hold the old and new profiles side by side while you move. Apple has not published Duo-specific details on transferring an eSIM from an older iPhone, and it has not published carrier deals or which carriers will sell the phone directly beyond saying “select carriers.”
Whether a carrier locks the phone to its network is a carrier policy, not something Apple’s release addresses. If you bought an eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro in one of the 12 countries above, the process is the same; the difference is that the Duo buyer in London, Delhi or Sydney gets no tray either.
