The iPhone Duo tops out at 2x optical-quality zoom, a 12MP crop from its 48MP main camera, before handing over to digital zoom up to 10x. The iPhone 18 Pro has a dedicated 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 4x, a 100 mm lens, and Apple lists an 8x optical-quality option at 200 mm on top of that. Those are Apple’s tech specs figures, and they describe the biggest single camera gap between the two phones.
Apple’s shorthand makes the difference easy to state. The iPhone 18 Pro has a 16x optical-quality zoom range, from 0.5x to 8x. The Duo has a 4x optical zoom range, from 0.5x to 2x. What 2x optical-quality means on the Duo
Apple’s press release describes the Duo’s main camera as having an integrated optical-quality 2x telephoto. In practice, that is the centre of the 48MP sensor read out as a 12MP image, the same technique Apple uses for the 2x stop on the iPhone 18 Pro. On a 26 mm lens, a 2x crop works out to roughly a 52 mm-equivalent field of view, the classic portrait length.
Because it is a crop rather than a lens, there is no second optical path, no extra glass and no extra aperture. The Duo’s 2x keeps the main camera’s f/1.6 aperture and sensor-shift OIS. Apple does not list any telephoto lens for the Duo at all, so nothing between 2x and 10x is optical.
What 4x and 8x give the iPhone 18 Pro
The iPhone 18 Pro’s third camera is a 48MP Fusion Telephoto with a 100 mm lens at f/2.8, built as a tetraprism with 3D sensor-shift OIS. That is a true 4x optical lens. Apple then applies the same crop trick it uses at 2x: a 12MP optical-quality 8x image at 200 mm, taken from the centre of the telephoto’s 48MP sensor.
The result is four usable focal lengths from 24 mm to 200 mm on the Pro, plus the 13 mm Ultra Wide, against three on the Duo that stop at the 2x crop. Both phones share an identical 13 mm f/2.2 Ultra Wide, so the 2x optical zoom out is the same on both.
What you actually lose with the Duo
- Any optical reach beyond 2x: the Duo has no 100 mm lens and no 8x crop, so 4x and 8x are digital.
- A ceiling at 10x: Apple lists up to 10x digital zoom on the Duo. It has not specified a digital limit for the 18 Pro.
- The variable aperture at 1x: the Duo’s main camera is fixed at f/1.6, while the Pro moves between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0.
- 3D sensor-shift stabilization on a long lens: the Duo’s OIS is on the 26 mm main camera only.
What you do not lose is resolution at the wide end. Both phones use 48MP sensors for the main and Ultra Wide cameras, both offer a 12MP 2x crop, and Apple says the Duo’s Ultra Wide matches the iPhone 18 Pro’s. The Duo also adds zero shutter lag on its main camera and a Camera Control button with a Siri Camera mode, according to Apple’s press release.
Who should care
If your photos are mostly people, food and places at arm’s length, the Duo’s 0.5x, 1x and 2x cover the same ground as the Pro’s first three stops. If you shoot sport, wildlife, stages or anything across a street, the iPhone 18 Pro’s 100 mm lens and 200 mm crop are the reason to pick it.
