Should You Wait for Apple’s Home Hub Before Buying HomeKit Accessories?

HomeKit vs Home Assistant: Why Apple Users Combine Both Platforms

Waiting for Apple’s expected Home Hub makes sense if you want a new central display, deeper Apple Intelligence features or a complete security setup. It is less necessary if you only need a light, plug or thermostat that already works reliably with Apple Home through Matter or HomeKit.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing a broader smart home push built around a hub and new accessories. Apple has also announced an October 13 event with a “Welcome Home” teaser, but it has not publicly confirmed the products that will appear.

The uncertainty matters because a hub can change how cameras, doorbells and automations work together, even when existing accessories remain compatible. Buyers planning a large installation should wait for Apple to explain supported devices, subscription requirements and regional availability before spending heavily.

Accessories carrying the Matter logo offer the clearest path for basic cross-platform control, although Matter support varies by device type and feature. Thread accessories may also benefit from a compatible border router already built into certain Apple TV and HomePod models, but shoppers should verify the exact model rather than assuming every Apple home device includes the same radio.

HomeKit-only products can still be a sensible choice when they solve an immediate need and have a strong record of software support. Apple’s existing HomeKit overhaul should not make a working lock or sensor useless overnight, although future hub-exclusive features may not reach older hardware.

It is worth delaying purchases of expensive camera bundles, video doorbells and smart locks until Apple confirms how its new platform handles video storage, facial recognition, local processing and guest access. Those features often depend on a particular hub, cloud plan or manufacturer app, so compatibility logos alone do not answer every question.

Buy simple Matter accessories now if you need them and the return policy is reasonable. Wait on a major security or whole-home purchase until Apple’s event provides firm specifications, because the hub’s real value will depend on the ecosystem around it rather than the display by itself.
