If you search for macOS Tahoe (26) in the Mac App Store today, you won’t find it. Apple has shifted the way it delivers major macOS updates, and that’s left some users confused about where to get the installer.
Here’s the bottom line: right now you can’t download macOS Tahoe from the App Store. The only official way to install it is through System Settings → General → Software Update. But eventually, Apple will likely post a direct App Store link to the full installer, it just hasn’t yet.
How macOS updates work now
In the past, Apple released macOS upgrades like Mojave and High Sierra directly in the Mac App Store, where you could search, click “Get,” and download the full installer.
That’s not the case anymore. With newer releases, including macOS Tahoe 26, Apple delivers them through Software Update. If your Mac is compatible, you’ll see the update there automatically.

Why the App Store still matters
Even though you can’t search for Tahoe in the App Store right now, Apple usually posts a hidden App Store link later. This is mostly for IT admins, people who want to make a bootable USB installer, or anyone who prefers to keep the full installer handy.
When that link goes live, clicking it will still redirect you into Software Update to handle the install — but it gives you access to the standalone installer file in your Applications folder.

Should you wait for the App Store link?
For most people, no. If your Mac supports Tahoe, it’s faster and simpler to update via System Settings. The App Store version, once it arrives, won’t be any different — it’s just another entry point.
If you prefer to keep a copy of the installer, you can wait until Apple posts it or use the softwareupdate command in Terminal to download the full package once Tahoe is available for your device.
