Apple has named six software features for the iPhone Duo that it lists for no other iPhone, rebuilt two features that already existed elsewhere, and described two more that sound fold-only but are not. The fold also ships on iOS 27.1 rather than the iOS 27 that reaches every other supported iPhone on Monday, September 14.
That is the whole software story Apple has put in writing. Nobody outside Apple has used any of it, so what follows is an audit of Apple’s own wording and of the places where it stops.
Key facts on iPhone Duo software
| Item | What Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| Version it ships with | iOS 27.1, not iOS 27.0 |
| iOS 27 for other iPhones | Monday, September 14, free |
| Features listed only for the Duo | Six, plus two rebuilt for the fold |
| Apple Pencil (USB-C) | Works on both displays, support arrives later in 2026 |
| Siri AI | Beta, English first, five more languages in October |
| Apple Intelligence languages | 15 in the Duo release; Apple’s own language list totals 16 with Simplified and Traditional Chinese counted separately |
| iOS 27.1 release date | Not published |
| Duo dates | Pre-orders Friday, October 16; on sale Friday, October 23 |
The six features Apple lists only for the fold
Four of the six are camera features that use the outer display or the on-device intelligence behind the shutter. The other two are the multitasking and layout behaviour that only make sense on a screen that changes size.

| Feature | What Apple says it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Split View | Two apps side by side on the inner display | Listed only for iPhone Duo |
| Posed-position layouts | Layouts adapt to open, closed and posed positions | Listed only for iPhone Duo |
| Smart Take | On-device intelligence detects when everyone is posed and takes the picture | Listed only for iPhone Duo |
| Duo Preview | The outer display shows the subject a live preview of the shot | Listed only for iPhone Duo |
| Kid Cue | Playful animations on the outer display to hold a child’s attention | Listed only for iPhone Duo |
| Duo FaceTime | Nearby friends join a call from the outer display | Listed only for iPhone Duo |
| StandBy | An upgraded StandBy for the fold | Rebuilt, not new to iPhone |
| Dynamic Island | Redesigned, described in vertical orientation | Rebuilt, not new to iPhone |
Apple Pencil (USB-C) would make a seventh, since Apple says it works on both displays, but that support is dated only to later in 2026. Our iPhone Duo camera guide covers the hardware those four camera features run on.
The two that are not exclusive at all
Dual Capture is the one most likely to be misread as a fold feature. Apple lists it in the Duo’s rear video specs as front and rear recording at 4K 30, and it also appears in Apple’s iOS 27 feature list as Dual Capture in FaceTime. What Apple does not do is list it in the iPhone 18 Pro’s video specs.
Call Context is the other. Apple’s Duo press release names a Call Context widget, but Call Context itself is an iOS 27 feature that surfaces relevant information from your apps when you call a business, and Apple lists it for watchOS 27 as well. The widget is the Duo’s presentation of it, not a separate capability.
What the Duo shares with every iPhone on iOS 27
The rest of the Duo’s software is the same release every supported iPhone gets on September 14, which for the Duo means it lands in October already carrying it.
- Siri AI in beta, English first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in October
- Photographic Styles 3 with tone, color, texture and grain, plus Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool and the enhanced Clean Up tool
- Smart Focus subject tracking, the same feature Apple lists for the iPhone 18 Pro
- A Camera Control button with a Siri Camera mode
- Messages via satellite, Emergency SOS via satellite and Roadside Assistance via satellite, free for two years
iOS 27.1 is a version Apple has not released
Apple’s press release states plainly that iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. As of Saturday, September 12, Apple’s developer releases page shows no iOS 27.1 row at all: the newest iOS 27 entry is still the 27.0 release candidate, build 24A435, dated September 9.
The Xcode 27.1 beta that developers need in order to build and test for the Duo is listed on Apple’s developer site as coming later this month, alongside a “Preparing your app for iPhone Duo” guide carrying the same wording. Apple has published no feature list, no release notes and no date for iOS 27.1, and there is no “About iOS 27 Updates” support document for the 27 cycle yet.
What Apple has not said
- Whether any of the six fold-only features will ever appear on a non-folding iPhone
- When iOS 27.1 reaches other iPhones, or what else is in it
- Whether Smart Take, Duo Preview or Kid Cue can be switched off, and where their settings live
- Whether third-party camera apps can use the outer display the way Duo Preview does
- How many apps Split View can hold beyond the two Apple describes, or which apps support it
- What the redesigned Dynamic Island changes beyond its vertical orientation
iOS 27 arrives for every other supported iPhone on Monday, September 14. iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and the phone goes on sale Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, with 28 more on Friday, October 30. Our Duo against the iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison covers the rest.
