Apple has confirmed that iOS 27.1 exists and said what it is for. In a developer post dated September 16, Apple wrote that iPhone Duo will run iOS 27.1 when it becomes available on October 23, and that a beta of Xcode 27.1, with a simulator for the foldable, arrives later this month.
That note explains a version number that puzzled people on September 16, when the beta channels went straight from iOS 27 to an iOS 27.2 beta with no 27.1 in between. Those 27.2 builds are betas, so what is in them can change or vanish before release.
What Apple actually wrote
The post is headed “Get ready with the latest beta releases” and carries a subhead, “Note about iOS 27.1 and iPhone Duo.” Two sentences do the work:

When iPhone Duo becomes available on October 23, it will run iOS 27.1. This version builds on the foundation of iOS 27 and introduces features that were purpose-built for the new foldable design.
Apple names none of those features. It also does not say whether iOS 27.1 will reach existing iPhones, or when. The only firm claim is that the foldable ships on it, which matches the September 9 press release: “iPhone Duo will be available with iOS 27.1.”
Xcode 27.1 gets the Duo simulator
The developer-facing half is more concrete:
Xcode 27.1 will add development support for iPhone Duo. This includes updated SDKs and a simulator that supports the all-new poses and orientations of iPhone Duo. A beta version will be available later this month.
“Later this month” belongs to Xcode 27.1, not to iOS 27.1. That distinction matters, because a simulator that reproduces the Duo’s poses is what lets an app developer lay out screens for a device almost nobody has yet. It is the practical reason apps should look right on day one rather than three weeks later.
Why your iPhone jumped to a 27.2 beta
On the same day, Apple posted 27.2 betas across the whole lineup. Its own opening line: “The beta versions of iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, and watchOS 27.2 are now available.” The September 16 builds are below, next to the shipping versions released on September 14, so you can tell at a glance which one your device is on.

Apple gives no explanation for the gap in the beta channel, so treat the obvious reading as a reading. What Apple has stated is only this: the foldable ships on 27.1, and the betas everyone else can install are 27.2.
The dates attached to iPhone Duo
From Apple’s September 9 press release, pre-orders begin Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability beginning Friday, October 23. Apple puts pre-orders in more than 70 countries and regions, and says iPhone Duo reaches 28 other countries and regions beginning Friday, October 30.
So the software timeline and the hardware one do not line up. If you are ordering a Duo on October 16, the version you unbox on October 23 is iOS 27.1, and it is a build that no iPhone in the world is running right now.
If you own any other iPhone, nothing here changes what you should install. iOS 27.0 is the current release, the 27.2 betas are developer software, and Apple has not said whether iOS 27.1 will reach other iPhones at all, or when.
