Apple Plans Fix For Mac Email Amid Microsoft Exchange Shutdown

Microsoft is turning off an older connection system for its Exchange email services this month, and the move is causing problems for people who check their work or school messages on Apple computers. The change stops the built-in email and calendar software on your Mac from syncing properly. Right now, the hardware maker is actively working on a software update to solve this problem and restore normal access for everyone.

A future system update will fix the broken email connection

Microsoft uses a system called Exchange Web Services to connect apps to its cloud servers. The company began turning off this older system in October 2026. Because the built-in Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders apps use this specific method, the shutdown breaks the connection.

Users checking their messages on an iPhone or an iPad do not have to worry about this change. Those mobile devices use a different communication method called Exchange ActiveSync, which Microsoft is keeping active. The disruption only applies to desktop and laptop software.

Apple plans to release a patch in a future macOS 27 update. This fix will shift the desktop apps to a newer connection standard. In the meantime, computer administrators can temporarily keep the old connection running for approved apps until Microsoft completely shuts it down in April 2027.

For now, users experiencing sync issues should check with their technology department or switch over to the official Outlook app to keep reading their messages until the permanent software patch arrives.
