Apple HomeView needs iOS 27.2: which iPhones get Siri AI and expressive voices

Siri AI on Apple HomeView and iPhone 18 Pro

Apple HomeView ships on November 13, and Apple’s own requirements show that your iPhone decides how much of it you get. Apple splits support into three tiers: iPhones that can set HomeView up, iPhones that unlock the personal side of Siri AI, and a short list that also brings expressive Siri voices.

For price, colors and the wall-mounted model, see our Apple HomeView launch story. This piece covers only what each iPhone can do with it.

Tier 1: any iPhone running iOS 27.2 or later

Apple’s HomeView store page answers the compatibility question directly: “Apple HomeView requires an iPhone with iOS 27.2 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 27.2 or later.” The tech specs page lists the same requirement, plus Wi-Fi internet access.

The fine print in Apple’s HomeView press release adds that “setup and multiuser support require a compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest software.” That applies to every person in the house who wants their own profile, not just the person doing setup.

The base requirement is generous. Apple’s iOS 27 page lists these iPhones as compatible:

  • iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16e
  • All iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 models
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)

An older phone still gets you a capable HomeView, because Siri AI runs on HomeView itself. Apple says users without an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad “will benefit from Siri AI’s broad world knowledge; ability to have rich, natural conversations; and improved music discovery.”

Tier 2: Apple Intelligence iPhones for personal Siri AI

The personal side of Siri AI, where HomeView pulls up your calendar, finds a message or acts across your apps, comes from your paired device. Apple’s footnote is specific: “Personal context requests require a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the latest software version with Siri AI turned on and set to a supported language.”

Apple’s Siri AI support document lists the qualifying iPhones as “iPhone 15 Pro models and later, iPhone 16 models or later, and iPhone Air.” On iPad, it lists iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad models with M1 or later.

Owning one of those phones is not enough on its own. Siri AI has to be switched on in Settings > Siri > Try Siri AI (Beta), and Apple says that step “will add you to a waitlist, and wait times can vary.” If your HomeView is on order, it is worth doing before it arrives.

Tier 3: expressive voices on six iPhones

Expressive voices let you adjust how expressive Siri sounds and how fast it talks. Apple says users set this “on their paired and compatible device,” and “that customization carries over to HomeView.”

The HomeView tech specs page lists the devices: “iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and iPad models with M4 and later and at least 12GB of unified memory.” The press release footnote says the same thing in shorter form: “iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro models, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro models, or iPad models with the M4 chip or later with a minimum of 12GB of unified memory.” The 12GB condition applies to iPads, not iPhones.

Apple’s Siri AI support document says expressive voices require a device with the “AFM Core Advanced on-device model.” The standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and the iPhone 16 lineup are not on the list, so they get personal Siri AI on HomeView without voice customization.

Countries: four of the eight miss expressive voices

Siri AI on HomeView launches in English in eight countries: the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK. Expressive voices have a narrower footprint. The specs page says they are “Available in English (Australia, Canada, UK, U.S.).”

That means buyers in India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa get Siri AI on HomeView but not expressive voices, even with an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo.

What to check before November 13

  • Update your iPhone in Settings > General > Software Update to iOS 27.2 or later.
  • On an Apple Intelligence iPhone, go to Settings > Siri > Try Siri AI (Beta) to join the waitlist.
  • Set your device language and Siri language to the same supported language. Apple lists this as a Siri AI requirement.
  • Make sure everyone who wants a personal profile has an Apple Account and an iPhone or iPad on the latest software. HomeView recognizes up to six people.

Personal content also has a proximity rule. Apple says Messages and Calendar content appears only when HomeView recognizes the enrolled user’s face and their paired iPhone or iPad “is present and has been recently unlocked.”
