Apple lists two different listening figures for AirPods 5 depending on which box you pick: up to four hours with Active Noise Cancellation on the $129 AirPods 5, and up to five hours on the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. The total with the case splits the same way, 20 hours against 22.

That is the detail most launch coverage flattened, because Apple’s own press release quotes only the five and 22 hour numbers and attaches them to the model with the Wireless Charging Case. The earbuds in the two boxes are otherwise described identically, which is what makes the gap worth reporting rather than tidying up. Our AirPods 5 announcement coverage used the press release figures, and Apple’s store and product pages now go further than the release did.
| Model | Price | ANC on | ANC off | Total with case | Case charging |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 | $129 | up to 4 hours | up to 6 hours | up to 20 hours | USB-C only |
| AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case | $149 | up to 5 hours | up to 7 hours | up to 22 hours | USB-C, Qi-certified chargers, Apple Watch charger |
Where each figure comes from
The four pages Apple publishes about AirPods 5 do not all say the same thing, and only one of them quotes a single figure. Here is what each one states.

| Apple page | What it says about ANC listening time |
|---|---|
| Newsroom press release, September 9 | Up to 5 hours of playback with ANC enabled, extending to 22 hours with the case, presented as the Wireless Charging Case model. No four-hour figure appears. |
| Apple Store buy page | Up to 4 hours on one charge with Active Noise Cancellation for AirPods 5, and up to 5 hours for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. |
| AirPods 5 product page | Up to 4 hours with ANC, up to 5 hours with the Wireless Charging Case, up to 22 hours of total battery life with ANC. |
| AirPods 5 tech specs | 4 hours ANC on and 6 hours ANC off for the standard model, 5 and 7 for the Wireless Charging Case model, 20 and 22 hours in total. |
The store page and the product page agree with each other, so the odd one out is the press release, which is also the document most people read on the day.

The earbuds are described as identical
Everything Apple lists about the buds themselves matches across the two models: the H2 chip, Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, next-generation Adaptive EQ, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, an IP57 rating, a 4.3 gram weight and identical 30.2 by 18.3 by 18.1 mm dimensions.
The published differences all sit in the case. The $149 case weighs 34.7 grams against 32.3 grams, carries a speaker so Find My can play a sound, and charges on Qi and Apple Watch chargers as well as USB-C. Apple lists a force sensor on both models but adds volume swipe only on the Wireless Charging Case version, which it calls a first for the open-ear form factor.
So one of two things is true. Either the two sets of buds differ in a way Apple has not described, or one of the listening figures is wrong. Apple explains neither, and we have not assumed which.

What it means if you are buying the $129 model
Plan around four hours of continuous listening with noise cancellation on, not five, and around 20 hours of total playback before the case itself needs power. Both models get about one hour of listening from five minutes in the case, according to Apple’s tech specs.
The standard case also charges over USB-C only, and neither box includes a cable or a power adapter. The cheaper model is the one where Apple’s headline numbers are least likely to describe what you bought, which matters most for anyone choosing on price alone.
The noise cancellation claim is phrased two ways as well
Apple’s press release says AirPods 5 remove up to 50 percent more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. The product page says up to 1.5 times more Active Noise Cancellation than the previous generation. The arithmetic is the same, but the second phrasing is a much less precise statement, and Apple applies both claims to each model equally. Neither figure came with test conditions, as the full event recap noted on the day.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not explained why two SKUs that share a spec sheet have different on-bud listening times, and it has not corrected either page. It publishes no talk-time figure for either model, no total-with-case figure for listening with ANC switched off, and no charge-cycle or reserve numbers for either case. Colors are not listed on the tech specs page, and no AirPods 5 support document or manual has appeared in Apple’s library yet.
Both models have been available to pre-order since September 9 and reach stores on Friday, September 18. iOS 27 arrives on Monday, September 14, and the hands-free Siri AI and Live Translation features need it, so the first honest test of Apple’s battery figures starts the week of the 18th. Pre-event expectations, collected in our AirPods 5 rumor round-up, had nothing to say about a two-model battery split, and neither did the keynote itself.
