Right on schedule with the launch of its first foldable, Apple just released a new batch of support documents for the iPhone Duo. These guides cover a variety of hardware and software features, but the most notable one focuses on troubleshooting potential hinge problems. If you are noticing any weird noises, unexpected bending, or trouble closing the device, you might want to take a look.

New guides help you fix loose hinges and case settings

The official troubleshooting guide points out a few specific warning signs for the iPhone hinge. Users should watch out for a device that will not open or close all the way, unusual noises during folding, or a hinge that feels loose. It also warns against using a phone with bent hardware or damage to the outer shell that stops it from working right.

If you run into these issues, the first thing the guide suggests is removing any cases or screen protectors. Next, you need to check if the hinge can hold the phone securely in different positions and look for trapped dirt or dust. Interestingly, the document notes that there are no software fixes for these hardware problems. If a quick cleaning does not help, you will likely need to get the inner display assembly replaced by a technician.

Beyond hardware fixes, the company also uploaded details on using cases that cover part of the outer display. When you snap on a compatible case, a prompt pops up giving you the choice to adjust the screen size. You can manually enable a setting called Shift Left Edge in the display menu, which moves your content over so the case does not block anything.

Since early pre-orders started shipping this week, more of these help pages will probably go live soon. With a brand new form factor comes a brand new set of hardware quirks to learn. Knowing what to look out for early on can help you spot a bad hinge before it turns into a much bigger repair bill.
