Apple Increases US iPhone Sales While The Broader Market Shrinks

The US smartphone market hit a slump early in 2026, but Apple managed to pull ahead, reports Counterpoint Research. During the first quarter, overall smartphone sales across the country dropped by 5.7 percent compared to last year. At the same time, Apple saw its iPhone sales volume rise by 1.3 percent. This growth pushed its total market share up 4 percent, standing out as a rare win while Android device sales fell by 14.4 percent.

High demand and delayed competitor launches drive the sales growth

A big reason for this success ties directly to the iPhone 17. Supply limits late last year created a backlog of buyers waiting to get the newest model. When units finally became available, people bought them in large numbers. The base model saw much higher interest than analysts originally expected.

On top of that, a major competitor gave Apple an unintended advantage. Samsung pushed the launch of its Galaxy S26 series back to mid-March. This delay left a gap in the premium phone market for the first two months of the year, and Apple easily filled it.

Because of this, the company secured 75 percent of all phone sales at Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. At Verizon alone, its share hit an impressive 77 percent.

Steady device pricing keeps buyers locked into the tech ecosystem

Pricing strategy played another major role in the first quarter results. Apple kept the entry cost of its most affordable new device the same as last year, while doubling the base storage space. In a period where rising memory chip costs forced other phone makers to increase prices, this choice made the Apple lineup look like a better deal.

This approach brings more people into the iOS software ecosystem. Once users settle into the operating system, they tend to stay. Analysts expect this decision to generate more long-term revenue from digital services. Meanwhile, the lower end of the smartphone market struggled heavily. Consumers dealing with inflated gas prices and credit card bills chose not to upgrade budget phones, dealing another blow to competing phone makers.

Apple clearly understands how to navigate a difficult economic environment. By holding prices steady and taking advantage of competitor missteps, the company has set a strong foundation for the rest of the year. If it can maintain this momentum, competing brands will have a very hard time catching up.
