The global tablet market is going through a tough phase right now. Recent data from Omdia shows that worldwide tablet shipments have plunged to their lowest point in nearly three years. In the third quarter of 2026, total shipments dropped by 23 percent to just 32 million units. This steep decline has heavily impacted major players, pushing Apple to face a massive 27.5 percent drop in shipments compared to last year.

Supply issues and minor updates keep buyers from upgrading early

Even with the steep drop, Apple kept its lead in the market. Its share slipped from 38.2 percent down to 36 percent. People are simply holding off on buying a new iPad because recent models do not offer big enough changes from older versions.

Other brands felt the pinch too. Samsung held onto second place with 5.4 million units shipped, which is a 22 percent drop from last year. The company managed to keep a 16.9 percent share of the market. Even with new product launches like their latest premium tabs, parts shortages made it hard to keep numbers up.

Lenovo was the rare exception in the top five. The brand actually saw a 12 percent bump in shipments, reaching 4.1 million units. Their basic slate models drove most of this growth. Meanwhile, Xiaomi and Huawei saw their numbers fall by 11 percent and 43 percent, showing just how widespread this slump is.

Research experts point out that regions like China, Western Europe, and the Middle East took the hardest hits. Tech companies are dealing with tight supply chains, forcing them to push tablets down on their priority lists for the next couple of years.

Looking ahead, the road to recovery looks long. With parts getting harder to find, manufacturers are struggling to offer the kind of hardware upgrades that get people excited to spend money. Shoppers will likely keep using their current devices longer, meaning the tablet space might not see a real comeback until at least 2028.
