Apple May Reconsider MagSafe Future on Upcoming iPhones

A strange new rumor suggests that Apple is currently questioning the future of MagSafe on its smartphones. According to the Weibo account Instant Digital, the company is debating whether to keep the magnetic charging system as a standard feature. This account has a solid history of sharing highly accurate leaks, making the claim hard to ignore despite how unlikely the move sounds to everyday users.

The company questions keeping magnets due to a future redesign

The idea of dropping MagSafe confuses many industry watchers. The iPhone 12 introduced the feature, and a massive accessory market quickly grew around it. The system is so popular that when the 16e launched without it, loud user complaints forced the company to add it back for the 17e model. The tech brand also helped build the universal Qi2 standard based on this exact technology.

The only logical explanation points to future hardware plans. Magnets take up internal space and add manufacturing costs. Reports indicate the manufacturer wants to totally redesign its phone as a single sheet of glass next year.

This upcoming overhaul, internally called the Glasswing project, might require dropping the magnetic ring to achieve a much thinner shape.

Internal opinions shift from aggressive expansion to sudden wavering hesitation

When the charging system first launched, internal teams pushed hard for its widespread use. The initial strategy was highly aggressive, with early plans aiming to put the connection on iPads as well. That tablet expansion never happened, and now the mood inside the company has supposedly flipped completely.

Sources say hardware teams are starting to waver on the necessity of the feature. No final decision has been formally made yet, so the familiar charging snap might stick around for a bit.

Still, the fact that such a beloved feature is on the chopping block shows that major physical changes are likely coming soon.

  • Magsafe provides safe slow charging and elimintate the wear & tear of plugging and unplugging. Why ditch a feature with no downside?
