Apple Store employees are reportedly being held to stricter rules during morning meetings before locations open. Mark Gurman says staff members are expected to stand, avoid beverages and devices, and remain fully engaged throughout the pre-opening briefing.
The rules also extend to the moment customers enter. Stores are expected to open five minutes before the advertised time, and the entire team must applaud the first visitors regardless of each employee’s role, according to the report.
A more controlled start to the retail day
Gurman says employees must “stay fully engaged” during the morning meeting. The restrictions suggest Apple wants a consistent briefing and opening ritual across stores, especially as it prepares wider changes to store layouts and service areas.

Apple has not publicly documented these internal meeting requirements, and its consumer retail page does not describe staff routines. The report therefore should be understood as an account of internal policy, not a customer-facing company announcement.
The stricter expectations arrive while Apple is testing new ways to manage retail work. MacObserver reported on AI-generated notes for Genius Bar appointments, a system designed to reduce manual note-taking with customer consent. The company has also tested an AI assistant in the Apple Store app for product questions.
Together, those changes point to tighter operating processes alongside new technology. Morning meetings can communicate sales priorities, product issues and service guidance before customers arrive, although rules about standing and drinks may also feel rigid to employees.
The report does not say when the stricter rules began, who issued them or what happens when employees do not follow them. It also does not explain whether staff with medical or accessibility needs receive different arrangements. Those details remain internal unless Apple chooses to address the policy publicly.
Implementation may also differ under local employment rules.
The customer applause is not new to every Apple Store, but the reported all-team requirement would make the practice more uniform. Apple has not said whether the policy applies to every country or whether accommodations alter the standing rule.
