Cancelling an iPhone 18 Pro Order: The Apple Upgrade Lease Carries a Penalty a Cash Purchase Does Not

Cancelling an iPhone 18 Pro order works one way if you paid outright or financed it with Apple Card Monthly Installments, and a different way if you leased it through Apple Upgrade. Apple’s published terms describe a refund for the first group and a warning about a substantial charge for the second, and the two documents that say so were written for different products entirely.

Apple’s Sales and Refund Policies cover the order itself. Apple’s Apple Upgrade footnotes cover the lease that some iPhone 18 Pro buyers chose instead of buying at checkout. Reading only one of the two gives an incomplete answer to a simple question.

Key facts on cancelling an iPhone 18 Pro order

Payment methodWhat Apple publishes about cancelling
Paid outrightApple’s order-cancellation terms apply. “If Apple cancels an order after payment, Apple will refund it.” No published buyer self-cancel process.
Apple Card Monthly Installments (0% APR)Same order-cancellation terms as an outright purchase; financing does not change the refund language Apple publishes.
Apple Upgrade lease (Klarna)A consumer lease, not a purchase. Ending it early: “You may incur a substantial charge if you terminate your lease before the end of the lease term.”
Apple’s own cancellation right“Apple may refuse or cancel any order or limit order quantity.”
Apple Store’s right to decline an order“At any time for any reason.”
Order confirmation emailDoes not “signify acceptance of your order.”

Before delivery, the same thin rulebook covers everyone

Whatever payment method is on the order, Apple’s general cancellation terms are the only published document that applies before the phone ships. Apple can refuse or cancel the order and, if it does so after payment, will refund it. What Apple has not published is a buyer-initiated cancellation process: no named button, no dedicated form, and no separate phone line for cancelling a pre-shipment order distinct from the general customer service channels Apple lists elsewhere on its site. That absence covers a straight $1,199 purchase exactly as much as an ACMI installment plan.

After delivery, the Apple Upgrade lease changes the maths

Apple Upgrade is a lease run through Klarna, and its footnote is explicit about what happens if you stop partway through: “Closing your lease and returning your device terminates your lease,” and doing that early can bring “a substantial charge.” The first monthly payment is due about 30 days after the device ships or is available for pickup, and the lease requires selecting an eligible carrier at checkout, the same requirement financing carries.

At the end of a full lease term, Apple describes three options: upgrade to a new device, buy the current one outright with a one-time payment, or return it. If none of those happens, “the lease will convert to a month-to-month lease for up to six months.” None of that termination language appears anywhere in the terms for an outright purchase or an ACMI installment plan, because those are not leases. A buyer who pays cash or finances at 0% and later wants to return the phone is working from the general order and return terms, not from a lease contract with an early-termination charge attached.

Apple’s own cancellation rights run in both directions

The same policy page that limits what a buyer can do gives Apple wide latitude of its own. Apple can refuse or cancel any order, limit the quantity available even after an order is placed, and the Apple Store “reserves the right to accept or decline your order at any time for any reason.” The one guarantee running the other way is narrow: if Apple is the one who cancels after payment has gone through, it will refund it. There is no published compensation beyond that refund.

What Apple has not said

  • No published self-service cancellation process for a buyer wanting out before the phone ships, on any payment method.
  • No stated dollar figure or formula for the Apple Upgrade lease’s “substantial charge” for early termination.
  • No statement of what happens if a carrier declines a financing application after the order is already placed.
  • No published distinction between cancelling before shipment and returning after delivery for outright or ACMI purchases, beyond the general terms above.

Pre-orders opened at 12:00 UTC on Saturday, September 12, and delivery is dated Friday, September 18. Anyone choosing between paying outright and leasing through Apple Upgrade this weekend is also choosing which cancellation terms apply later.
