Disney characters are coming to OpenAI’s Sora video generation app with full permission for the first time. The companies announced a major licensing deal that allows Sora to generate short fan videos using a wide range of Disney characters. Both sides describe the partnership as a big step toward responsible AI in entertainment.
The deal includes a three-year license that covers more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. Fans will soon create short videos that feature these characters, and the clips will also appear as curated selections on Disney+. OpenAI says Sora and ChatGPT Images will use this licensed material to give people more creative control over the stories they enjoy.
A separate part of the agreement involves a large financial move. Disney plans to invest $1 billion in OpenAI and will receive warrants to buy more equity later.
OpenAI confirmed that Disney will also use its APIs to build new tools for Disney+. Disney will deploy ChatGPT to its employees to support internal workflows. Both companies say they want to respect creators and protect user safety while building new AI experiences.
What Fans Can Expect
Fans will use Sora and ChatGPT Images to generate videos and images featuring characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Ariel, Baymax, Simba, Elsa, Moana, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and many others. They will also have access to iconic Marvel and Lucasfilm characters such as Black Panther, Iron Man, Loki, Thanos, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Leia, and the Mandalorian.
OpenAI says Sora will start generating these fan-inspired videos in early 2026. Disney and OpenAI plan to collaborate on new ideas for Disney+ subscribers, giving viewers fresh ways to interact with familiar stories.
Both companies say the deal sets standards for responsible AI. They commit to policies that prevent harmful content, protect creative rights, and keep users safe.
