Gamers have been waiting a long time to see more of Grand Theft Auto VI, and a recent partnership with Netflix just sent the hype into overdrive. Following the debut of a long gameplay trailer on the streaming platform, early orders for the highly anticipated game shot up by 436 percent overnight. The new footage also showed a massive split between PlayStation and Xbox players, with PS5 owners completely dominating the recent sales push.

The new gameplay footage drives massive console sales for Sony

The recent 26-minute trailer was a temporary exclusive for the streaming platform. According to market research from Sensor Tower, that short window was enough to make sales explode. Before the video dropped on August 27, the game already had over four million early buyers. But seeing actual gameplay for the first time since last year pushed millions more to lock in their copies ahead of the November launch.

The data reveals a clear favorite when it comes to hardware. On the day the video aired, early purchases on the PS5 jumped by a massive 606 percent. Xbox owners showed interest too, but their numbers only went up by 127 percent. This shows that Sony fans are much more eager to jump into the next chapter of the open-world series.

The streaming app benefits from the huge video game crossover

Rockstar Games took a big risk by partnering with a streaming service to show off its biggest project. It turns out that move paid off for both companies. Not only did the developer see a huge boost in sales, but Netflix also enjoyed a major spike in app downloads. In just one day, the app jumped 61 spots to become one of the top downloads on the Apple Store, proving that games have incredible drawing power.

While the publisher has not shared its own internal numbers yet, the top boss at Take-Two Interactive called the current demand exceptional. Even with concerns over potential performance limits on modern consoles, the new footage proved that the appetite for this virtual world is stronger than ever. The industry has never seen a single video drive this much instant revenue, setting a new standard for how major titles are sold before they hit store shelves.
