The growing number of fake online personalities is forcing major social media platforms to rewrite their rules. Instagram is officially changing its policies to require accounts featuring virtual personas to clearly share their artificial nature. The social network will soon begin penalizing fake influencers who try to pass themselves off as real humans, sharply limiting their reach across the platform unless they adopt a mandatory profile tag.

The platform replaces its previous tag with a new profile label

To deal with the growing presence of fake creators, the app recently updated its tagging system. Previously, the company offered an optional creator tag that worked as a broad category for accounts posting artificial content. Now, the platform has replaced that option with a mandatory label. This new designation applies specifically to accounts built around a virtual person rather than a real human.

The policy shift arrives as advanced artificial intelligence tools make it incredibly easy to generate realistic photos and videos. Recent investigations have uncovered hundreds of fake influencers promoting mobile apps, selling brand deals, and even posing as doctors. While these accounts do not always break the existing rules set by Meta, their rapid spread has sparked widespread concerns regarding misinformation and misleading marketing tricks.

The company clarified that this requirement only targets accounts operating as fake personas. Creators who simply use AI tools to edit their photos or enhance their creative process do not have to use the new profile tag.

Accounts that fail to use the new label face distribution limits

The social network introduced these penalties after users repeatedly complained about being tricked by realistic digital avatars. A company spokesperson noted that people strongly dislike interacting with a profile they believe is human, only to discover later that the person does not actually exist.

Under the new guidelines, accounts that feature a virtual person but refuse to display the required label will face severe distribution limits. The system will restrict their posts from appearing in recommendation feeds like Explore and Reels. On the other hand, profiles that proactively apply the tag will not see any negative changes to their standard reach.

For those who believe their account was wrongly penalized or mistakenly flagged as fake, the platform provides an appeals process through the Account Status dashboard. By enforcing these new rules, the app aims to give users a much clearer understanding of who they are actually following.
