Insuring $129 AirPods 5: Apple Prices Coverage for Three Devices at Once, and None for AirPods Alone

AirPods 5 cost $129, or $149 with the Wireless Charging Case. Apple has not published a per-device AppleCare+ price for either model, and the only coverage figure that exists for this launch, AppleCare One at $19.99 a month, was built to cover up to three products for that price, not one pair of earbuds. A buyer who owns only AirPods 5 and wants that coverage pays the full three-device rate for a single $129 or $149 purchase.

Run that rate for a year and the arithmetic gets uncomfortable: twelve months of AppleCare One at $19.99 comes to $239.88, which is our own multiplication of Apple’s published monthly rate, and it is more than the AirPods themselves cost if they are the only device the plan is covering.

What $129 or $149 buys

Apple’s AirPods 5 store listing confirms $129 for the standard case and $149 for the version with the Wireless Charging Case, which adds Qi and Apple Watch charger compatibility along with an extra hour of noise cancellation. Both prices are exact and published, the clearest number in this entire piece.

What is not in the box at all

Apple’s own listing states that AirPods 5 “do not include a USB-C Charge Cable or power adapter,” which goes further than iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo, both of which at least ship with a cable. Whatever charges these earbuds first, a cable, a Mac, or an adapter bought separately, is a cost sitting entirely outside the $129 or $149 sticker.

The one coverage plan that is priced

Apple’s support pricing pages list AirPods 5 in a headphones table alongside Beats products, but the price cells for that row are empty, and Apple’s dedicated AirPods support product page returns an error rather than a price. The only AppleCare figure Apple has actually priced across this entire launch is AppleCare One, at $19.99 a month for up to three devices, with each additional device beyond three adding $5.99 a month.

What that plan actually costs for a single pair, and the repair price that does not exist

If AirPods 5 are the only device enrolled, the buyer is still charged the full $19.99 a month that Apple built for three products. Twelve months of that comes to $239.88, our own arithmetic on Apple’s published rate, which is more than the $129 AirPods themselves and close to double the $149 Wireless Charging Case version. AppleCare One becomes far better value the moment a second or third device joins the same plan, which is exactly how Apple designed it, but that also means a single pair of AirPods is the worst-priced use case for the only coverage plan Apple has actually published a rate for.

Apple has published no repair pricing for AirPods 5, so there is no figure to weigh against either the $19.99 monthly plan or simply replacing a lost earbud out of pocket. Whether coverage is worth it for a $129 purchase is a question Apple’s own published material cannot currently answer either way.
