All three rear cameras on the iPhone 18 Pro are 48MP, and Apple took four years to get there. The first 48MP sensor arrived on the main camera of the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022, the Ultra Wide followed in 2024, and the telephoto only caught up last year.
Five years ago every rear camera on a Pro iPhone was 12MP. Reading Apple’s spec sheets in order shows one lens moving at a time, and it explains why several of the framings you use every day still produce 12MP files.
Key facts on the Pro’s 48MP timeline
| Item | What Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro rear cameras | Three, all 48MP Fusion |
| First 48MP iPhone camera | Main camera, iPhone 14 Pro, 2022 |
| Ultra Wide reaches 48MP | iPhone 16 Pro, 2024 |
| Telephoto reaches 48MP | iPhone 17 Pro, 2025 |
| First Pro with three 48MP lenses | iPhone 17 Pro |
| Front camera | 18MP Center Stage since 2025, 12MP before that |
| Still listed at 12MP | The 2x at 48 mm and the 8x at 200 mm |
When each lens reached 48MP
These figures come from Apple’s tech specs page for each phone. Read the columns downward rather than across to see how staggered the changes were.

So the iPhone 18 Pro is the second Pro with a matched set, not the first. What changed this year sits in the optics rather than the sensors: the variable aperture on the 24 mm main camera moves between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, while the other two lenses keep single fixed apertures.
The telephoto was the last to move
The zoom lens had the longest wait and the most changes along the way. It was a 12MP 3x on the iPhone 13 Pro, 14 Pro and 15 Pro, a 12MP 5x at 120 mm on the iPhone 16 Pro, and then a 48MP 4x at 100 mm with a tetraprism design on the iPhone 17 Pro.
Apple shortened the optical reach from 5x to 4x in the same year it quadrupled the resolution, because the extra pixels are what produce the longer crop. The iPhone 18 Pro keeps that arrangement, with 3D sensor-shift stabilization on the 100 mm lens, and our iPhone 18 Pro against iPhone 17 Pro comparison covers which camera lines are genuinely new.
The 12MP files Apple still lists
A 48MP sensor does not mean a 48MP photo at every focal length. Apple describes the 2x at 48 mm and the 8x at 200 mm as 12MP optical-quality crops, both taken from larger sensors rather than from lenses of their own.
That is how Apple gets to its summary of 8x optical-quality zoom in, 2x optical zoom out and a 16x optical-quality range from three physical lenses. Two of the five focal lengths on the zoom control are crops, and Apple labels them as 12MP on the spec sheet.
The front camera’s one jump, and what resolution leaves out
The selfie camera sat at 12MP for four Pro generations and moved once, to the 18MP Center Stage camera at f/1.9 on the iPhone 17 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro lists the same 18MP figure, unchanged.
Resolution is also the least informative number on any of these rows. Apple publishes no sensor size for any iPhone camera, and the apertures still differ widely: f/1.48 to f/4.0 on the main, a fixed f/2.2 on the Ultra Wide and a fixed f/2.8 on the telephoto. iPhone Duo makes the point plainly with two 48MP cameras and no telephoto at all, as our iPhone Duo camera explainer sets out.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published sensor sizes, pixel sizes or supported megapixel output for each focal length, and it has never explained why the three lenses reached 48MP three years apart. It has also published no image quality comparison between a 48MP capture and one of its 12MP optical-quality crops.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders open today, Saturday September 12, at 5 a.m. PT, which is 12:00 UTC, with availability on Friday September 18. iOS 27 arrives free on Monday September 14 and brings the Camera and Photos features Apple announced with the phones.
