Apps that have not been rebuilt for iPhone Duo will appear in the center of its inner display, with empty space surrounding the window, according to Apple’s developer guidance. The foldable, which starts at $1,999, goes on sale October 23, 2026, and how your apps look on it depends on which version of Apple’s software development kit (SDK) each developer last built with.

Apple says in its iPhone Duo preparation guide for developers that “all apps will run on iPhone Duo.” Running and fitting the screen are two different things, though, and Apple splits apps into three groups.
Why the screen size matters
iPhone Duo has two displays. The inner one is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR panel at 1878 by 2670 pixels, and the outer one is 5.4 inches at 1398 by 2034 pixels, according to Apple’s spec page.

Apple tells developers that “Hardcoded screen sizes, fixed orientations, and device assumptions can break layouts, leading to stretched, clipped, or misplaced content.” The system also moves apps between the two displays: “Unfold it and your app expands to fill the inner display; fold it and your app returns to the outer display.” Apps that were only ever designed for a fixed iPhone screen were not built for that.

The three ways an app can look
| App built with | What Apple says happens |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 SDK or earlier | Centered window with empty space around it when open; content to the left of the status bar and camera when closed |
| iOS 27 SDK | Fills most of the inner display, but avoids the status bar on the right edge |
| iOS 27.1 SDK or later | Uses the full display, with toolbars and tab bars running vertically below the status bar |
Apps built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier
This is the group most people will notice. Apple says these apps “run on iPhone Duo, but won’t adapt to all layouts.” When the phone is open, “your app will appear in the center of the display, with empty space surrounding the window.”
On the outer display, the change is smaller. With the phone closed, “the outer display will show your app’s content to the left of the status bar and camera.”
The apps still work. You just will not get the full benefit of the larger screen until the developer ships an update.
Apps built with the iOS 27 SDK
Apple describes this as a middle step. Apps built with the iOS 27 SDK “resize to fill most of the inner display on iPhone Duo, but still avoid the status bar on the right edge.” Apple says this “provides an improved experience, as empty space is minimized.”
So an app recompiled with the iOS 27 tools uses most of the screen, with the right edge left to the status bar.
Apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later
These are the apps Apple calls “optimized for iPhone Duo.” They “extend to use the full display, with toolbars and tab bars appearing vertically below the status bar.” Apple says this gives people “an optimal and consistent experience as they move across displays.”
That vertical bar layout is visible in Apple’s own product images, where apps like Slack place their navigation down the right side of the inner display.
Apple’s guidance also says that on the inner display, an app “should look like a natural extension of its iPad layout.”
iPhone Duo will ship running iOS 27.1, as we covered when Apple released the update. Developers get the matching tools in Xcode 27.1, which Apple says “adds development support for iPhone Duo” and includes an iPhone Duo simulator.
How to tell which apps are ready
Apple has given buyers a simple signal. When a developer submits iPhone Duo screenshots in App Store Connect, the app’s App Store product page “will display a badge to let people know your app is optimized for iPhone Duo.”
That badge is the easiest way to check an app before or after you buy. Apple will also make Duo screenshots mandatory: “Starting April 2027, any apps or games submitted will need to include screenshots for iPhone Duo.” We have more on that requirement here.
Apple opened App Store submissions on October 5, 2026, telling developers they could submit “iPhone Duo optimized apps and games in App Store Connect today.”
What to expect after launch
If an app you use every day shows up as a centered window with empty space around it, it was most likely last built with the iOS 26 SDK or earlier. It will keep working, and an update from its developer is what moves it to a full-screen layout.
Apple is pushing developers along with an app resizability skill in Xcode, which “scans your project” for layout problems and “suggests a fix,” along with iPhone Duo workshops and labs.
For multitasking, Apple says the inner display supports Split View and app switching, and that content “reacts as iPhone Duo folds, reorients when it’s turned to the side, and switches to the appropriate display when it’s flipped over.”
