Kansas City Public Schools Swap 30,000 PCs For Apple Gear

Kansas City Public Schools just shared a massive update about its classroom technology. The school district is officially shifting to an all-Apple device lineup for its students. To make this happen, the schools will phase out more than 30,000 older Windows computers and Chromebooks backed by Google. The change means students across different grades will soon use iPads and MacBooks to complete their daily school assignments.

The school system buys thousands of new laptops for students

Chief Technology Officer Scott Jones explained that the district picked Apple because its devices are secure, durable, and reliable. He also noted that students feel proud of their schools when they get to use high-quality products. A top executive from the tech company originally mentioned this transition during a recent earnings call, but now the school district has confirmed the full details on its own website.

So far, the district has purchased more than 4,500 new MacBook Neo laptops. These specific computers will go to students in the eighth grade and higher. Younger students will not be left out, as they will get to use the existing supply of iPads and older laptops that the district already owns.

This switch marks a big change in how the district handles classroom learning. By giving everyone the same brand of computer, teachers and students will have an easier time working together on projects. It creates a simple setup for the district and sets a clear example for other schools that might want to update their own aging classroom tech soon.

  • I have painful memories from thirty years ago when my local school district was soliciting bids for computers to be used in the classroom. After public comments from parents about wanting their child to use a REAL computer Apple was excluded from the bidding process. When my son entered the engineering school at the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana his math lab was exclusively Macs! What a shock it must have been for those who wanted to use a REAL computer.
