macOS 27.2 beta 2 gives the volume and display brightness overlays a more precise segmented design. The change appears when a tester presses the matching keys on a Mac keyboard, making each adjustment step easier to count at a glance.
Apple’s developer release page confirms that macOS 27.2 beta 2 arrived September 21 as build 26B5091g. Apple does not document the slider redesign in its release notes, but beta testers have shown the new keyboard-triggered interface running in the build.
What changed in the new overlays
The thin continuous bar has been replaced by a row of visible segments. Each press fills or removes one segment, restoring a clearer indication of how many steps separate the current setting from minimum or maximum.

Apple also uses one larger icon at the left instead of placing smaller symbols at both ends. When the matching control is present in the menu bar, the overlay appears below that icon. The sliders inside Control Center have not received the same redesign in this beta.
A small correction to Liquid Glass
The update keeps the rounded, translucent look of macOS 27 while bringing back the discrete feedback associated with earlier Mac interfaces. It fits Apple’s broader effort to refine readability in macOS Golden Gate’s Liquid Glass design.
This is the second test build in the 27.2 cycle. The first macOS 27.2 beta focused its published notes on known system issues and StoreKit Testing changes rather than a visible consumer feature.
Because the new sliders are still in beta, their appearance and behavior can change before release. Apple has not announced a public date for macOS 27.2, and the company has not promised that this design will ship unchanged. Anyone who depends on a Mac for daily work should wait for the finished update, while testers should report inconsistent placement, missing overlays, or accessibility problems through Feedback Assistant.
