WhatsApp is expanding message reactions on Apple Watch from six preset choices to the full emoji library. The change makes quick replies from the wrist more expressive and removes one of the clearest limitations in the native watchOS app.
WhatsApp’s official Apple Watch announcement originally promised quick emoji reactions alongside full messages, voice notes, call alerts, media, and chat history. The latest rollout keeps the familiar six reactions behind a press-and-hold gesture, while adding a larger picker for every supported emoji.
How the expanded picker works
Users can open recent emoji first, then browse Smileys, Nature, Food, Activity, Travel, Objects, Symbols, and Flags. Selecting an emoji sends it as the reaction to that message, so an iPhone is no longer required when the desired response is outside the default six.

The update builds on the native app that first appeared through TestFlight, which we covered when WhatsApp began testing on Apple Watch. Before that app, owners mainly depended on mirrored notifications and the limited reply options described in our earlier Apple Watch guide.
WhatsApp requires Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 10 or newer. The watch app remains a companion to WhatsApp on iPhone, and personal messages and calls continue to use end-to-end encryption.
The expanded reaction picker is rolling out gradually, so it may not appear on every watch at the same time. Updating WhatsApp on the paired iPhone and keeping watchOS current are the sensible first checks, but there is no manual switch that forces a server-side rollout.
WhatsApp has not published a separate support note with a universal release date for the expanded picker. The practical change is straightforward: reactions that previously required reaching for an iPhone can now be sent directly from the conversation on Apple Watch.
Call notifications, long-message viewing, voice messages, images, stickers, and recent chat history remain available alongside the improved reaction menu.
