The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max keep the 48MP Fusion main camera but give it a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4, manual controls, Smart Focus tracking, faster Night mode and a set of new video features. For photographers, it is the most substantial change to an iPhone camera in several generations.
Apple did not touch the Ultra Wide or front camera this year, and the megapixel count did not move. What changed is how much control the main camera gives you, and that is a different kind of upgrade from the sensor bumps of the past.

Reasons 1 and 2: the lens finally has moving parts and you can drive them
Every previous iPhone used a fixed aperture, so background blur came from software and low-light performance came from stacking frames. A lens that can open to f/1.48 gathers roughly seven times the light of the f/4 setting and produces optical depth of field rather than a simulated one.

Pairing that with manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the stock app is the bigger statement. Apple has spent years hiding these decisions from users, and it is now inviting them to make the choices themselves.
Reasons 3 and 4: keeping subjects sharp and expanding video
A wide aperture makes focus less forgiving, which is why Smart Focus subject tracking arrives in the same year. Apple has not detailed how it works, but it addresses the obvious weak point of shooting at f/1.48.
Night mode is faster, and video gains Cinematic effects at up to 60 fps, 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse and an enhanced Audio Mix with music isolation. Apple has not published frame rate and resolution combinations, so the full picture is still to come.
Reason 5: a creative look you can prove is real
Photographic Styles now include texture and grain controls, the first time the feature has gone beyond tone and color. Apple Reference Image sits underneath it, keeping an untouched original with verification metadata so a stylized image can still be shown to come from a real capture rather than an AI generator.
The A20 Pro’s dual 16-core Neural Engine, which Apple says doubles the AI processing of the A19 Pro, is the likely engine behind several of these features, though Apple has not assigned them to the chip specifically. According to keynote coverage, the camera was presented as a single system rather than a list of separate features.
The upgrade comes at a cost. Both phones are $100 dearer than last year, at $1,199 and $1,299, and the camera hardware is identical between the two sizes. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability from Friday, September 18.
