Apple has made six performance claims about the A20 Pro and the phones built around it, and not one of them is a gaming benchmark. There are no frame rates, no named games, no scores and no comparison with any hardware other than Apple’s own previous chips.
That is not a criticism, it is the shape of what Apple publishes. Every figure below is a generation-over-generation comparison Apple measured itself, and reading them as test results is the mistake worth avoiding before iPhone 18 Pro reaches buyers on Friday, September 18.

Every A20 Pro performance claim, with its source
Six claims exist across Apple’s September 9 press releases and product pages. Each one names what it is being compared against, and each belongs to a specific page, which matters because two of them are about iPhone Duo rather than iPhone 18 Pro.

What Apple compared against, and what it did not
Every claim in that table is measured against Apple silicon from last year. None is measured against a competing phone, a handheld console or a PC, and Apple publishes no test conditions for any of them on the pages these figures come from.
A figure such as up to 40 percent faster graphics describes a change Apple measured internally under conditions it has not detailed. It cannot be turned into a frames-per-second number in a specific game, and it does not say whether the gain is a peak or something the chip holds for an hour. The two claims that belong to iPhone Duo, not iPhone 18 Pro
The 20 percent CPU figure and the 35 percent sustained-performance figure come from Apple’s iPhone Duo material. Both phones use the same A20 Pro, and Apple has still published the sustained-performance comparison only for the Duo and its custom vapor chamber.
For iPhone 18 Pro, the equivalent statement is the cooling one, about three times the cooling performance of the prior design, and cooling performance is not a measure of frames or scores. Apple’s CEO John Ternus does name gaming in his Duo quote, describing the phone as helping people stay immersed whether they are enjoying content, multitasking across apps or gaming, and a quote is not a measurement either.
The parts of a gaming spec sheet Apple does publish
Plenty of the surrounding hardware is documented precisely, and it is more useful than a marketing percentage.
- Display: 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch OLED at 460 ppi, ProMotion up to 120Hz, 1000 nits typical, 1600 nits peak HDR and 3000 nits peak outdoor.
- GPU features: Neural Accelerators in the GPU cores and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, per Apple’s tech specs.
- Battery ratings: up to 24 hours typical use and 36 hours video playback on iPhone 18 Pro, 30 and 45 hours on the Pro Max, with no gaming figure published.
- Storage: 256GB to 2TB, useful given modern game download sizes.
- Ports: USB-C with USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s.
- iPhone Duo adds a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest Apple has put on an iPhone.
The battery numbers in particular are worth reading against our iPhone 18 Pro battery breakdown, because video playback hours tell you very little about an hour of a demanding game.
What Apple gave developers
The developer side of the release is where gaming actually appears by name. Apple’s June developer announcement lists Managed Background Assets, a Steam Asset Converter, Game Porting Toolkit 4 and Unity plug-ins.
Those are tools for bringing bigger games to the platform rather than claims about how they run. Apple’s iOS 27 page, meanwhile, carries no Games app section in the material published so far, so anything about a redesigned games hub this year is not something Apple has stated.
What Apple has not said
- Frames per second in any game, on any A20 Pro device.
- The name of a single game used to demonstrate the chip.
- Any benchmark score, or any comparison with non-Apple hardware.
- Battery life while gaming, or how performance holds up over a long session on iPhone 18 Pro.
- GPU clock speeds, or the memory figure, which Apple’s tech specs page does not list.
- Whether the 40 percent graphics figure is a peak or a sustained result.
iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open on Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT and the phone reaches stores on Friday, September 18, which is the first point at which anyone outside Apple can measure a game on it. iPhone Duo, with the same chip, follows on Friday, October 23.
