Neither version of AirPods 5 has a published launch discount anywhere. Apple’s prices are $129 and $149, Amazon, Walmart, Costco and Target have published no AirPods 5 offer, and the one confirmed retailer promotion of this launch is Best Buy’s Apple Watch Series 12 trade-in deal, which expires 9/18/2026 and has nothing to do with earbuds.
So the only decision that changes what you pay is the $20 between the two models. It is worth being precise about what that $20 buys, because Apple’s own press release quotes battery figures that belong to the more expensive one.

The battery numbers in the press release are the $149 model
This is the trap. Apple’s release quotes up to five hours of playback with noise cancellation and up to 22 hours with the case. Apple’s own spec page splits the two products, and those figures belong to the Wireless Charging Case version. The $129 model is four hours and 20 hours.

Everything else matches. Both use the H2 chip, both are rated IP57, both get Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Personalized Spatial Audio, and both do a five minute quick charge for around an hour of listening.
What the $20 works out to
On Apple’s published figures, the $20 buys one extra hour of noise cancelling playback per charge, two extra hours across the case, the swipe volume control and the ability to drop the case on a Qi pad or an Apple Watch charger. That is our arithmetic on Apple’s numbers, and it is a 15 percent price increase for a 25 percent longer single charge.
If you already own a Qi pad or an Apple Watch, the $149 model is the straightforward pick. If you charge over USB-C anyway and take the buds out for two hours at a time, the $129 model gives up very little.
Where the price does move
- The Veterans and Military Purchase Program takes 10 percent off, which is $12.90 or $14.90. Apple states that Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple Upgrade are not available in that storefront.
- Apple Card Daily Cash pays 3 percent back up front on Apple purchases, or $3.87 and $4.47.
- Apple Certified Refurbished lists savings of up to 15 percent with a one-year warranty and AppleCare eligibility, and it does cover AirPods as a category. There is no AirPods 5 stock, and Apple does not publish a schedule for when a model appears.
- Apple Trade In accepts AirPods, but publishes no per-model dollar figure for them anywhere we can read.
One route that is no longer open: Apple’s AirPods 4 store page now shows AirPods 5, so buying last year’s model cheaply from Apple is not a plan you can rely on. Stepping up instead of down costs $100, since AirPods Pro 3 is $249 and rated for up to eight hours with noise cancellation.
What has not been confirmed
- Apple has not published an AppleCare Plus price for AirPods 5. The only AppleCare figures published for this launch are AppleCare One at $19.99 a month for three devices and AppleCare One Family at $49.99 a month from September 14.
- No AirPods 5 trade-in value has been published by Apple.
- No retailer, carrier or gift card promotion on AirPods 5 has been published.
- Apple has not published a Live Translation language list on the AirPods 5 spec page.
AirPods 5 reach stores on Friday, September 18, the same day as Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. Pre-orders have been open since September 9, and iOS 27 arrives on September 14, which is what the hands-free Siri AI features need. Nothing published suggests either price moves before launch day.
