For anyone who spends real time in airports, the buy is the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, and the one add-on worth the money is Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799. Apple rates the Pro Max at 30 hours of typical use, and the Ultra 4 is the only current Apple Watch with satellite messaging.
Everything else on a traveler’s shortlist turns on one published detail rather than on taste: whether the device has a SIM tray, how long Apple rates the battery, and whether the feature you are buying works in the language and country you are going to.

The eSIM rule that decides where you can buy
Apple’s specs page states that iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max carry dual eSIM with two active lines, store eight or more profiles, and in 12 markets the phone has no physical SIM tray at all. Those markets are Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United States and the US Virgin Islands.

Apple’s own footnote is the sentence to read twice: use of an eSIM requires a carrier that supports eSIM and a wireless service plan. iPhone Duo goes further still, with no physical SIM in any market and more than 500 supported carriers, so a buyer picking up a Duo abroad has no tray to fall back on anywhere.
Why the Pro Max, and what the foldable changes
The Pro Max case is arithmetic. Apple rates it at 30 hours typical use and 45 hours of video playback against 24 and 36 hours for the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro, for $100 more at 256GB. The cost is weight: 249 g against 211 g.
iPhone Duo is rated at 24 hours of mixed use, up to 44 hours of video on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner one, and it weighs 254 g. It is the better device for watching something on a long flight and the more awkward one to buy for a trip, because it lands on Friday, October 23 and is eSIM-only worldwide.
The Apple Watch choice is about satellite, not size
| Device | Apple’s price | Travel case | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | from $799 | Satellite SOS, Messages and Find My, 50-hour battery, 100 m water | 63 g, and twice the price of Series 12 |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | from $399 | 24-hour battery, international roaming on cellular models | Apple lists no satellite support at all |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | from $249 | The cheapest way to get a watch on the trip | No satellite, 18-hour battery, 1000 nits |
| AirPods 5 | $129 or $149 | Live Translation, active noise cancellation, IP57 | Live Translation needs an Apple Intelligence iPhone |
The Ultra 4 is the only one of the three watches Apple lists with satellite communication, and Apple says the two included years of satellite apply to Ultra 3 and later. It is also rated at 50 hours of normal use and 84 hours in Low Power Mode, against 24 and 38 hours for Series 12.
Translation, and the places it stops working
iOS 27 ships free on Monday, September 14 with Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime captions and phone calls, plus auto-generated subtitles for video that can be translated. Apple Intelligence covers 16 languages, counting Simplified and Traditional Chinese separately, and Siri AI starts in English with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish in October.
AirPods 5 add Live Translation on the hardware side at $129, and Apple states the feature requires the latest operating system and Apple Intelligence. Two other travel-shaped limits are published: Apple says Siri AI and the other Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while it works through regulatory requirements, and Maps Local Lists is a US-only feature.
What has not been confirmed
- Apple publishes no roaming price, no carrier eSIM terms and no list of which carriers support eSIM in which country. That is a question for the carrier, not for Apple’s page.
- Apple has not published a satellite feature list for iPhone Duo beyond Messages, Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance with two years included.
- Per-configuration Apple Watch prices, including cellular, titanium and ceramic, are not published. Only the $249, $399 and $799 starting prices are.
- Apple publishes no per-device AppleCare+ price for any September 2026 product, and no international warranty comparison.
