Apple Certified Refurbished is one of the few routes that still takes money off an iPhone bought from Apple, and Apple states the terms plainly: special savings of up to 15%, a standard one-year limited warranty, and a new battery and outer shell on every refurbished iPhone. What the storefront does not have, as of September 10, is a single iPhone 17 generation device.
That gap matters more than usual this year. On September 9 the older iPhones Apple kept in the line went up by $100 each on Apple’s Store pages, so the familiar move of buying last year’s model cheaply from Apple is not available. Refurbished stock runs a generation behind the new lineup, and Apple publishes no schedule for when that changes.

Those lines come from Apple’s Why Refurbished page and its refurbished iPhone storefront. The new battery and shell clause is the part worth reading twice, because it applies to iPhone and iPad and not to refurbished Macs.

What 15 percent is worth in dollars
Apple does not publish a refurbished price until a unit is listed, so the only honest way to size the discount is to apply Apple’s own ceiling to Apple’s own current prices. This is our arithmetic, not a price list.

Read that as the shape of the discount rather than an offer. None of those five models was listed as Certified Refurbished on September 10, and 15 percent is a maximum Apple sets per listing, not a rule applied to every unit.
The stock cycle, and why there is no refurbished iPhone 17
On September 10 the newest refurbished iPhone on Apple’s storefront was an iPhone 16 with 512GB, unlocked, at $909, in black, white and pink. No iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17e or iPhone Air appeared anywhere in the catalogue.
Apple only refurbishes a model once it has been on sale for a while, and it publishes no restock calendar, no waiting list and no estimated date for any specific model.
The practical consequence for anyone shopping after the event: the two phones Apple just discontinued, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, have no first-party refurbished route at all right now, and Apple has given no indication of when one will appear.
The catches worth knowing before you buy
- The discount is a ceiling. Apple says up to 15 percent, and individual listings often come in under that.
- You buy what is listed. There is no configure-to-order option, so colour and capacity are whatever Apple has that day.
- Stock is a snapshot. Any refurbished price quoted anywhere, including here, is only true at the moment it was read.
- The catalogue lags the lineup. Refurbished stock today stops at the iPhone 16 series.
- Apple publishes no schedule. There is no page that tells you when a model will be added.
The upside is genuine, though, and it is the warranty. A Certified Refurbished iPhone carries the same one-year limited warranty as a new one and stays eligible for AppleCare products, which is the clearest difference between this and any private resale listing.
The other Apple routes if the storefront has nothing
Apple Trade In is the biggest published lever. Apple’s own wording for this launch is that customers trading in an iPhone 13 or later can get $175 to $885 in credit instantly, and the credit lands at the point of sale rather than as bill credits. The $885 end needs an iPhone 17 Pro Max in top condition, while an iPhone 13 sits at the $175 floor, so plan around your own model rather than the headline.
Apple’s Veterans and Military storefront takes 10 percent off, verified through ID.me, with the catch that Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple Upgrade leases are not available there. There is no student discount on iPhone at all: Apple’s Education Store lists iPhone 18 Pro at the same $1,199.
What has not been confirmed
- Apple has not published any schedule for when iPhone 17 generation devices will join the refurbished catalogue, or whether every model eventually does.
- Apple does not publish refurbished prices before a unit is listed, so no percentage can be promised in advance.
- Per-device AppleCare+ prices for the products announced in September 2026 are not published on Apple’s pages, so the cost of adding coverage to a new purchase is unknown.
- Apple has published no statement about refurbished stock levels or restock frequency.

Re-check the refurbished storefront on the day you plan to buy, because what is listed today will not be what is listed then.
