Apple Reference Image signs a photograph at the moment it is taken. Apple describes secure, pixel-level signing of photo data at capture, with the signed sensor data developed by Private Cloud Compute into an unalterable reference image that can be viewed alongside the edited version.
The purpose is narrow and worth stating precisely: it lets someone show that a picture began in a camera rather than in a generator. It does not make a photograph true, and Apple does not claim that it does.

What Apple says happens at capture
The sequence Apple describes has three parts. The sensor data is signed as the shutter fires, Private Cloud Compute turns that signed data into a reference image, and the reference then sits beside whatever edits follow so the two can be compared.

Nothing in that description depends on the photographer remembering to do anything. It is a capture-time property, which is the only place it could work: a signature added later would be signing an image that had already had a chance to change.
Who the feature is aimed at
Think of anyone who has to be believed about a photograph. A reporter filing from an event, a seller describing damage on a used item, someone documenting a repair or a delivery, an inspector recording a site, a parent keeping a record of something that mattered.
- People whose work is disbelieved by default, where an original matters more than a good edit.
- People who edit heavily and want the untouched frame preserved next to the version they publish.
- People building an archive now, against questions that arrive years later.
For everyone else it is background machinery. You do not have to use it, think about it or turn it on, and Apple has published nothing suggesting it changes how a photo looks.
What it does not claim to do
It does not verify that a scene is what it appears to be. A staged photograph signed at capture is a signed staged photograph. The claim is about provenance, meaning the image came from this sensor at this moment, not about the honesty of what was in front of the lens.

It also does not police editing. iOS 27 ships with a heavier set of AI photo tools than any release before it, including enhanced Clean Up, Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool and an Image Playground that now produces photorealistic images. The sharing question
The question a reader will ask first is whether the reference travels. If you send the photo to a friend, post it, or hand it to an insurer, does the signed original go with it, and can the recipient check it without an iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple has not published an answer. There is no published file format, no published export path, no statement about messaging apps or web uploads, and no published tool for anyone outside the Photos app to inspect a reference image. Until that exists, the safe assumption is that verification happens on the device that took the picture.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published how the reference is stored, how much space it uses, whether it can be deleted separately from the photo, whether it applies to video, or whether it works on every camera and format including ProRAW. It has not named a verification standard or a third-party checker.
