Readiness is a single score between 0 and 10, produced once a day and updated as the day goes on, built from four inputs Apple names: recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep. It ends in one of four recommendations, Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It.
The catch for anyone weighing an upgrade is that Apple lists the Readiness app only on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Getting it means new hardware, from $399.
Readiness in one table
| Item | What Apple has published |
|---|---|
| Score range | 0 to 10, daily |
| Inputs | Recent activity, training load, vitals, sleep |
| Recommendations | Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, Go For It |
| Update cadence | Produced daily, updates during the day |
| Watches listed | Series 12 and Ultra 4 |
| Cheapest published route | Series 12 from $399, or an Apple Upgrade lease from $11.99 a month over 24 months |
| Elsewhere | Readiness summaries appear in the new Health app Insights tab in iOS 27 |
The four inputs, and what each one asks of you
| Input | What Apple says feeds it | What you have to do |
|---|---|---|
| Recent activity | The watch’s own activity tracking | Wear it through the day |
| Training load | Apple’s training load measure from your workouts | Record workouts on the watch |
| Vitals | The new Health Sensing System: heart rate every five seconds, HRV every five minutes, Recovery HRV against your baseline | Wear it during the day and overnight |
| Sleep | Sleep tracking on the watch | Wear it in bed |
Three of those four assume near-constant wear, and one of them requires the watch to be on your wrist while you sleep. That is the honest cost of the feature, and it is a habit change before it is a hardware purchase.

Apple has an answer to the obvious objection. A five-minute charge is quoted at up to 10 hours of sleep tracking on Series 12 and Ultra 4, and a 15-minute charge at 12 hours of normal use on Series 12 or 18 on Ultra 4. Series 12 is rated at up to 24 hours of normal use, so a short top-up before bed is the intended pattern.
Why the score needs the new sensors
Recovery HRV is the piece that is new to this generation. Apple measures HRV every five minutes, which it describes as 24 times more often than Series 11, splits it into overall HRV and Recovery HRV, and compares the overnight Recovery HRV figure with your personal baseline rather than a population average.
Apple has not said whether Readiness will appear on Series 9, Series 10 or Series 11 under watchOS 27, and it is not in the watchOS 27 feature list Apple published alongside the September 14 software release. Until Apple says otherwise, assume it is tied to the S11 generation.
Is one score worth switching watches for
If Readiness is the only reason you are shopping, you are paying at least $399 for a number whose weighting Apple has not published, from a device you have to wear day and night for it to mean anything. Twenty-four months of the Apple Upgrade lease at $11.99 comes to $287.76 on Apple’s published monthly figure, which is our arithmetic, and Apple describes that as a lease rather than a route to ownership, with end-of-term terms it has not published here.
If you were replacing an ageing watch anyway, the calculation is different. Readiness arrives with the hardware at no extra cost, alongside 24-hour battery life, the Steps complication, Audio Intelligence and a ceramic case option, none of which Apple’s September 9 announcements treated as separate purchases. Apple’s Trade In page shows no dollar estimate for any Apple Watch until you answer its condition questions, so treat the full price as your budget until you have a quote in hand.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published how the four inputs are weighted, how many nights of sleep data are needed before a baseline is usable, or what a given score should change about your day beyond the four labels. It has not said whether Readiness reaches older watches, whether it is available in every region and language at launch, or what titanium, ceramic and cellular Series 12 models cost. It has published no Apple Watch trade-in values.
Series 12 and Ultra 4 are on pre-order now and reach stores on Friday, September 18. watchOS 27 and iOS 27 arrive on Monday, September 14, which is when the Health app side of Readiness becomes visible.
