Apple Watch Series 12 Aluminum, Titanium or Ceramic: What Each Case Weighs, and What Apple Has Not Priced

Choosing between aluminum, titanium and ceramic on Apple Watch Series 12 changes four published things: the front crystal, the weight, the case dimensions in ceramic, and the finishes on offer. It changes nothing about the chip, the sensors, the display or the battery.

It also changes the price, and that is the part Apple has not filled in. The only figure published is From $399, which covers the 42mm aluminum model. Titanium, ceramic and cellular prices are not in Apple’s release.

The three materials at a glance

AluminumDark Bronze, Light Gold, Black, Space GrayCeramic Shield 2100 percent recycled aluminum
TitaniumRadiant Gold, NaturalSapphire crystal100 percent recycled titanium
Ceramic (new this year)Pearl White, Night BlueSapphire crystalNot published by Apple

Apple quotes 40 percent recycled content overall for the aluminum and titanium models, with a battery using 100 percent recycled cobalt and 95 percent recycled lithium, and 100 percent fiber-based packaging. It has published no equivalent figure for the ceramic case.

The crystal is the real difference, and it is not rankable

Aluminum Series 12 models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple calls tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than Ion-X. Titanium and ceramic models use sapphire crystal, as they have in previous generations.

Apple has not published a comparison between Ceramic Shield 2 and sapphire, so you cannot rank the two from its numbers. The honest reading is that the cheapest case now carries the newest cover material, and the expensive cases carry the traditional one. That was not spelled out during the Surprise and Shine keynote.

Weight and size, material by material

Configuration42mm46mm
Aluminum, GPS32.2 g39.5 g
Aluminum, GPS and Cellular31.5 g38.6 g
Titanium36.5 g44.9 g
Ceramic, Pearl White41.7 g51.3 g
Ceramic, Night Blue42.8 g52.9 g

A 46mm Night Blue ceramic case is 52.9 g against 39.5 g for the same size in aluminum, a difference of 13.4 g, which is our arithmetic on Apple’s figures. Ceramic is also physically larger: 43mm and 47mm tall rather than 42mm and 46mm, 9.85 mm deep rather than 9.7 mm, and 41mm wide in the larger size rather than 40mm. Band fit ranges are unchanged at 130 to 200 mm for the smaller case and 140 to 245 mm for the larger one.

One oddity worth flagging: Apple’s spec page as we read it lists the aluminum cellular models as slightly lighter than the GPS models. That is Apple’s figure, not a typo of ours.

What the material does not change

  • The S11 chip with a four-core Neural Engine and 64GB of storage
  • The Health Sensing System, with heart rate every five seconds and HRV every five minutes
  • An Always-On LTPO3 display at 2000 nits peak, 326 ppi, refreshing down to 1 Hz
  • 50 m water resistance and IP6X dust resistance
  • Up to 24 hours of normal use, 38 hours in Low Power Mode, 10 hours of outdoor workout
  • The Readiness app, the Steps complication and Audio Intelligence
  • What is in the box: the watch, one band and a Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C cable

What each material costs

Apple has published only the $399 starting price and an Apple Upgrade lease from $11.99 a month over 24 months, which is a lease rather than a purchase and whose end-of-term terms are not in this release. Titanium, ceramic, cellular and HermĆØs prices are all unpublished, as are band prices, so anyone budgeting for a ceramic Series 12 is guessing until Apple’s store pages fill in. Apple Watch HermĆØs Series 12 uses the radiant gold titanium finish with a Noir satin Clou de Selle band and the new Rocabar Club band, again with no price attached.

If you want the cheapest route, the aluminum case is not a compromise on sensing or battery, and it is the only one with the new crystal. If you want the material for its own sake, wait for the configuration prices before committing, because the gap between $399 and a ceramic cellular model is entirely unknown. Ultra 4 at $799 is worth watching for the same reason.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published prices for titanium, ceramic, cellular or HermĆØs models, band prices, the recycled content of the ceramic case, a toughness comparison between Ceramic Shield 2 and sapphire, or any Apple Watch trade-in value. It also has not said whether ceramic will be stocked in both sizes at launch, a detail the pre-event expectations did not cover.

Pre-orders are open now and Apple Watch Series 12 reaches stores on Friday, September 18 in more than 50 countries and regions, so configuration prices should be visible on Apple’s store pages well before then.
