Ceramic Shield 2 sits on the front of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, on the outer display of the iPhone Duo, and on the front crystal of the aluminum Apple Watch Series 12. Every claim Apple publishes for it is a scratch claim: three times better scratch resistance on the iPhone Duo, per Apple’s press release, and tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than Ion-X on the Series 12, per Apple’s product page.
That distinction matters, because scratch resistance and drop resistance are different problems and Apple has published a number for only one of them this year. Nothing on Apple’s tech specs, product or press pages puts a figure on how Ceramic Shield 2 behaves when a phone lands on a corner. Apple’s numbers are about scratches, not cracks
The clearest figure Apple gives this year belongs to the iPhone Duo. The press release describes the outer display as Ceramic Shield 2 with three times better scratch resistance, and it does not say what that multiple is measured against or under what test.

The Apple Watch Series 12 claim is comparative in a different way. Apple’s Series 12 page says the material is tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than Ion-X, the aluminum model’s previous front crystal, and again the wording is about toughness rather than a survivable drop height. For the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple’s tech specs list the material as part of the build description, “Aluminum unibody design, Ceramic Shield 2 front, Ceramic Shield back”, with no separate resistance figure attached. Treat any specific multiple you see for the 18 Pro front as unpublished.
The surfaces it does not cover
On both phones the back glass is Ceramic Shield, not Ceramic Shield 2, so the front and back of the same device are not the same material. The iPhone Duo’s folding inner display is different again: Apple describes a custom polymer cover with 40 percent higher stiffness than the industry standard, laid over high-strength glass layers and finished with a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-texture surface.

The pattern is that Apple reaches for Ceramic Shield 2 where a flat outer surface takes daily contact, and for sapphire or a polymer stack where the job is different. A folding panel has to bend, which is why the inner screen of the iPhone Duo is not glass in the same sense as the outer one.
What it does not protect against
- Water and dust. That is the IP68 rating, which Apple lists for both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo at a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.
- The frame and the corners. Apple’s claims describe the cover material, not the aluminum unibody on the 18 Pro or the titanium frame on the Duo.
- The back glass, which is the older Ceramic Shield on both phones.
- The titanium and ceramic Apple Watch Series 12 models, which use a sapphire crystal instead.
- Anything Apple quantifies as a drop rating, because Apple has not published one.
Apple still sells protection for all of it. The iPhone 18 Pro has updated Clear, silicone and FineWoven cases plus a wrist strap, and the iPhone Duo has a $79 case in sand and navy blue and a $129 Folio with an integrated kickstand in navy blue and taupe. What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a drop-test figure, a scratch-hardness scale, a test method behind the three times claim, or a comparison between the iPhone 18 Pro front glass and the iPhone Duo outer display. It has also not published repair pricing for either front panel, or a hinge cycle rating for the Duo.
