For a child’s first Apple Watch, buy Apple Watch SE 3 at From $249 in the 40mm size. It is the cheapest and lightest watch Apple sells, at 26.3 g for the 40mm GPS model, it runs watchOS 27, and the features a family actually uses are in the software rather than in the $150 or $550 above it.
The catch arrives at the checkout rather than on the spec sheet. Apple publishes only a starting price for each of its three watches, so the cellular version that lets a watch work away from a parent’s iPhone has no published price at all.

Why SE 3 at $249 is the pick
SE 3 gives a child the same operating system as the expensive watches. watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14 for SE 3, Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later, and Apple’s list of watchOS 27 features includes child accounts with built-in protections and Apple Watch For Your Kids setup without an iPhone. Apple also lists Apple Watch For Your Kids among Series 12’s connectivity features. The watch side of that does not depend on paying $399.

On hardware, SE 3 runs the S10 chip with 64GB of storage, an Always-On display at up to 1000 nits, a temperature sensor and a 50 meter swimproof rating, and Apple describes its Ion-X front as offering four times the crack resistance of the previous SE. Battery is up to 18 hours of normal use, 32 hours in Low Power Mode, and about 45 minutes to 80 percent.
Name the catches. SE 3’s spec sheet lists no electrical heart sensor and no Blood Oxygen sensor, so the ECG and Blood Oxygen apps are not part of the $249 watch. Its 18 hours is the shortest battery in the lineup. Apple publishes no wrist range for SE 3 in the material we have, while the smallest Series 12 starts at a 130 mm wrist, so a small wrist is a fitting question you settle in a store. And SE 3 briefly vanished from Apple’s store before the September event, so it is a 2025 model sold beside two 2026 ones.
The cellular question Apple has not priced
A watch that a child wears while a parent’s iPhone is somewhere else needs cellular, and this is where the published record runs out. Apple’s store shows From $249, From $399 and From $799 and nothing per configuration, so the cellular premium, the titanium and ceramic premiums and Hermes pricing are all unpublished. Series 12 cellular models support RedCap for 5G and LTE, and Apple lists international roaming among the Series 12 feature set, but carrier plan costs are a separate bill that Apple does not publish either.

If a household already has an old watch on a drawer shelf, that Best Buy offer is the only published launch promotion on a 2026 Apple Watch, and it can bring Series 12 closer to SE 3’s price. It expires on 9/18/2026, which is launch day. Apple’s own trade-in page publishes no per-model figures for watches, so treat any number you see elsewhere as an estimate rather than as Apple’s.
And the AirPods question
AirPods 5 start at $129, with a $149 version whose only differences are a case that charges wirelessly and over an Apple Watch charger, a case speaker for Find My, a volume swipe on the stem, and an extra hour of battery: five hours with noise cancelling on and 22 hours with the case, against four and 20 on the $129 model. Apple lists Headphone levels and Headphone Accommodations among the AirPods 5 features, and both models are IP57. The catches for a young listener are that Siri AI on watchOS 27 is in beta, English first, and not available to users under 13, and that the redesigned Health app launches in US English with some features limited to users 18 or over.
