Buy the iPhone 17 at $899. For a first iPhone it removes the two decisions that most often go wrong, because it starts at 256GB rather than 128GB and it carries three usable focal lengths, and it is rated for up to 30 hours of video playback, more than any iPhone below $1,199.
The lineup you are choosing from is small. Apple sells seven iPhones: iPhone 17e at $699, iPhone 16 at $799, iPhone 17 at $899, iPhone Air at $1,099, iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199, iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299 and iPhone Duo from $1,999. Four of those prices went up $100 on September 9, and Apple announced no increase, so it is visible only in the Store listings.

Why iPhone 17 at $899 is the answer
Storage is the decision a first-time buyer is least equipped to make, and iPhone 17 makes it for you at 256GB. The camera set is the second: a 48MP Fusion main at 26mm f/1.6, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13mm f/2.2 and a 12MP 2x crop at 52mm cover wide, standard and a modest zoom without you having to learn which lens is missing.

The rest is the polish you notice daily. The 6.3-inch display runs ProMotion at up to 120Hz. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage unit rather than 12MP. The front glass is Ceramic Shield 2. Charging reaches 50 percent in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter, or 30 minutes with a 30W adapter over MagSafe, and MagSafe and Qi2 both run at 25W. Apple’s rule for full Apple Intelligence is iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 or later, so iPhone 17 is comfortably inside it.
Name the catches. The port is USB 2 at 480Mb/s, so moving a large video library by cable is slow. The 2x is a sensor crop rather than a dedicated telephoto lens. Storage stops at 512GB. And the $899 figure includes a $30 connectivity discount Apple applies to iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 only, with the unlocked 256GB configuration recorded at $929.
Two reasons to spend less
The first is a fixed budget. iPhone 17e at $699 is the least Apple charges for a new iPhone, it starts at 256GB, and it needs no discount tied to a carrier plan to reach that price. Be aware of what is unsettled: its detailed specification is not confirmed here, so read Apple’s own page for the chip, the cameras and the battery hours before you commit. For scale, the previous e model launched at $599 with a single 48MP camera and no Ultra Wide, a notch rather than Dynamic Island, and Qi charging without MagSafe.
The second is size. iPhone 16 at $799 is 6.1 inches, 170 g and 7.80 mm, the lightest phone in this bracket, and it keeps Dynamic Island, Face ID, a 48MP Fusion main and MagSafe at 25W. What you trade is ProMotion, a 12MP Ultra Wide instead of 48MP, eight hours of battery rating, and a 128GB base that most first-time buyers outgrow. Its unlocked 128GB price is recorded at $829.
The costs that are not on the price tag
| Cost | What Apple publishes |
|---|---|
| Power adapter | Not in the box. The box holds the phone and a 1 m USB-C cable |
| AppleCare+ for one iPhone | Not published for any September 2026 product |
| AppleCare One | $19.99 a month for up to three devices, plus $5.99 for each extra |
| AppleCare One Family | $49.99 a month, available from September 14 |
| Apple Upgrade lease | iPhone from $17.99 a month. AppleCare is not included, and the end of term is not published |
| Veterans and military store | 10 percent discount, but Apple Card Monthly Installments and Apple Upgrade are not available there |
Two of those matter most for a first purchase. The missing adapter means the charging times Apple quotes need a separate purchase, and the Apple Upgrade lease is not the old iPhone Upgrade Program, which Apple retired on July 28, 2026. The lease is run with Klarna, it excludes AppleCare, and Apple has not published what happens to the phone when the term ends.
What a first-time buyer should skip
Skip iPhone Air at $1,099. It is the thinnest and lightest iPhone at 5.64 mm and 165 g, but it has no Ultra Wide camera, its battery rating is 27 hours, and $100 more buys the full Pro camera system on iPhone 18 Pro. Thinness is a reason to buy it, and it is not a first-phone reason.
Skip iPhone Duo at $1,999 too. It uses Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID, has no telephoto lens beyond a 2x crop, supports dual eSIM with no physical SIM, and does not ship until October 23. A folding first iPhone is an expensive way to learn what you actually want.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published per-device AppleCare+ prices for anything it launched in September 2026, and it has not published the higher capacity prices for iPhone 16 in the served Store page. It has not explained the $100 increases, because it announced none. If you are trading in an old phone from another platform, Apple publishes only a range, $175 to $885 in the US for an iPhone 13 or later, and no per-model table.
iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14, free, and runs on iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE from the second generation, so any of these three phones starts on current software. iPhone 17e, iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 are on sale now rather than on pre-order.
