Image Playground can generate photorealistic pictures in iOS 27. Apple’s wording is that it creates unique, high-quality images in just about any style, including photorealistic, and because it is an Apple Intelligence feature it runs only on the devices on Apple’s Apple Intelligence list and carries a daily usage limit.
Both halves of that need saying together. Photorealistic generation is the headline change, and the requirement attached to it rules out most iPhones in use today, including several that run iOS 27 perfectly well.

What Apple says Image Playground makes now
The photorealistic line appears on Apple’s iOS 27 page and is repeated on the macOS and visionOS pages. Apple does not publish sample images with the claim, does not name the model behind it, and does not say what happens when a request is refused.

Apple is also shipping the opposite feature on the same phones. Apple Reference Image, announced with iPhone 18 Pro, stores an untouched original with verification metadata alongside any edits, so a photograph can be shown to have come from a real capture rather than a generator. The devices Apple lists
Apple Intelligence support, not iOS 27 support, is the gate. iOS 27 itself installs on iPhone 11 and later plus iPhone SE second generation and later, and most of those phones will not see Image Playground at all.

Apple Watch appears on the Apple Intelligence device list as well, for Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later and SE 3, but only when paired with an Apple Intelligence iPhone, and Apple does not list Image Playground as a watch feature. The daily limit and the paid tier that is coming
Apple’s footnote is specific about which features are capped. It reads that certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, including but not limited to Siri AI, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, Image Playground and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts.
The size of the limit is not published. Apple says only that daily limits may vary by feature, request complexity and system demand. Its June announcement adds that increased access comes with most iCloud+ subscription plans, and the footnote states that expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future.
Languages, regions and where else it runs
Apple Intelligence covers 16 languages: Chinese in Simplified and Traditional forms, which Apple counts separately, plus Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese.
On regions, the exclusion Apple publishes names Siri AI and features that rely on Siri AI, and covers iOS, iPadOS and watchOS in the EU. Apple has not published a separate region list for Image Playground, and its product pages carry only the general line that some features may not be available in all regions or languages. Image Playground also appears on the iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27 pages with the same description, and Genmoji and the Image Wand tool in Notes sit beside it, as the event recap lays out.
What Apple has not said
- How many generations a day the limit allows, on any plan.
- Which iCloud+ tiers count as most iCloud+ plans, or what the future fee will be.
- Whether photorealistic output can depict real people, and what the refusals cover.
- Whether Image Playground is available in the EU, separately from the Siri AI exclusion.
- Which model generates the images, or how much runs on device rather than on Private Cloud Compute.
iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate and visionOS 27 all arrive on Monday, September 14 as free updates, and Apple’s Apple Intelligence page says the new features are available starting that day. The daily limit is the number to watch once people start generating.
