Apple has published three performance claims for iOS 27, each with the device it was tested on. It has published nothing about what the update does to battery life, nothing about how large the download is, and nothing about how much free space it needs.
Those are the three things people actually search for on update day, and two of them have no Apple-sourced answer at all. Here is what Monday’s free update is documented to change, and where the documentation simply stops.

The three speed claims, and how Apple measured them

Each number comes from one device in one scenario, which is normal for Apple and worth knowing before you treat any of them as a promise about your own phone. The 30 percent figure is the only one measured on older hardware, and it happens to be measured on the oldest generation iOS 27 supports.

Apple lists three further changes without figures: an optimized CPU scheduler, more seamless switching between the best available Wi-Fi and cellular connection, and rebuilt search in Spotlight, Photos and Mail.
Battery: Apple has published nothing
There is no Apple statement about how iOS 27 affects battery life on any iPhone, new or old. The battery figures Apple does publish describe hardware, not software: iPhone 18 Pro is rated at up to 24 hours of typical use, 36 hours of video playback and 33 hours of streamed video, and the Pro Max at 30, 45 and 40 hours.
Those ratings were measured in July 2026 on preproduction units and they belong to the phone. Apple has published no equivalent before-and-after figure for an update on an existing device, and it has never published one in past cycles either.
Storage: no size, no requirement, one clue
Apple publishes no download size for iOS 27 and no free-space figure. The one adjacent line it has published sits in the About iOS 26 Updates document, which was last updated on September 9, 2026 and says that iOS 26.6 “optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27.”
The general support page that would normally carry the update mechanics, “Update your iPhone or iPad,” was last updated on December 5, 2025, does not mention iOS 27, and still uses screenshots from earlier releases. No About iOS 27 Updates document exists yet.
What changes in the apps you already use
- Liquid Glass gets more uniform refraction and improved contrast, app icons are sharper, and a new slider in Settings lets you take the look from ultraclear to fully tinted
- Mail search gains a new ranking system that pushes the most relevant results into Top Hits
- Safari can group tabs into topics automatically, and Notify Me will watch a page for a price change or a restock
- Messages sync faster, with improved missed-message notifications and unread counts
- Apple Pay checkout lets you swipe to switch cards and shows rewards and debit balances, and Wallet turns physical loyalty and membership cards into passes
- iCloud Shared Albums move to full-resolution sharing, with web access for people on Android or Windows
- Find My gains custom sharing durations, Music adds lyrics translation and pronunciation pairings, and AirPods gain a Custom EQ for lows, mids and highs
- Parental controls are redesigned, and Apple says the new Screen Time features arrive after you install the Screen Time update within iOS 27
Two things on the roadmap are not part of Monday. Messages Suggestions and the Passwords alerts that can update a weak or compromised password are both described by Apple only as coming in a future software update.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a download size, a free-space requirement, an install time, a release hour, any description of a staged rollout, or any guidance on battery behaviour after updating. It has published no security notes for iOS 27, no About iOS 27 Updates document, and nothing about returning to iOS 26 if you change your mind.
It has also published no performance data for iOS 27 on any device between the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone 15, which covers most of the phones eligible for the update. Buyers of the iPhone 18 Pro skip the question entirely, since Apple lists the box contents as an iPhone with iOS 27 already installed and a 1 m USB-C cable.
