The new Home features in iOS 27 do not run on an iPhone by itself. Apple attaches three conditions to the camera side of it: a home hub, an iCloud+ subscription and an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. All three are listed as requirements, not suggestions.
The subscription part is the piece that gets lost. In its June announcement Apple said increased access to server-backed features comes with most iCloud+ plans, “which also include Apple Intelligence support for compatible Home cameras”. iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14, so this is the moment those conditions start to matter.

That table is the whole published feature set. Apple has not posted a support document for any of it, so there is no step list, no screenshot and no settings path to quote yet.

Apple’s requirement line sits with the HomeKit Secure Video features rather than with the notification summaries. The careful reading is that the camera features need the full stack, and that Apple has simply not written a separate requirement sentence for the summaries.
Note what is not on the list: an iPhone is not one of the hubs. Apple names HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K, so a household with cameras and a brand new iPhone 18 Pro but no hub still does not clear the bar.
What the summaries and descriptions actually claim
Apple’s wording for the notification change is “intelligently combining related activity notifications”. The claim is about consolidation, so several alerts from the same event arrive as one update rather than a queue of separate ones.
For video, Apple describes “describing what happened in a selection of HomeKit Secure Video footage before you watch” and “using AI to search for a clip based on what happened”. Both are framed around events rather than identities, and Apple has published no accuracy figure, no sample of the wording a description produces and no list of the events it recognises.
Where the processing happens, and the limits attached
Apple Intelligence runs on device and on Apple servers through Private Cloud Compute. Apple’s published promise is that personal data “is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else”, and that outside experts can verify that claim at any time.
The cost of the server side is a cap. Apple says features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits that vary by feature, request complexity and system demand, that increased access comes with most iCloud+ plans, and that expanded access “will be available for a fee in the future”. The A20 Pro in this year’s iPhones and in iPhone Duo does not exempt anyone from that.
What Apple has not said
- Which notification types get combined, or how far back a summary reaches
- Any accuracy claim for the clip descriptions or the search
- Whether descriptions and search do anything at all without iCloud+, beyond listing it as required
- Which iCloud+ tier is enough, and whether the storage tiers differ here
- Anything specific about EU or China availability for the Home camera features
The features land with iOS 27 on Monday, September 14. Anyone buying an iPhone on Friday, September 18 gets iOS 27 in the box, but the hub, the subscription and the camera are still separate purchases, and Apple has published nothing further about any of them.
